Hector Gellangarin Couture Collections Shine in Madrid Fashion Scene

Renowned Filipino fashion designer Hector Gellangarin made a bold statement on the international stage with his stunning Hablon Couture Collections, showcased in a well-received fashion show held in Madrid, Spain last June 2024. The event was made possible through the dynamic collaboration with Villaflor Creatives Madrid, led by Ken Macuja Villaflor, and the support of the Ilonggo Association of Madrid. Creative direction by Henry Tejero.

The fashion show highlighted Gellangarin’s signature use of Hablon, a traditional handwoven fabric native to Iloilo and the Western Visayas region in the Philippines. Known for its intricate textures and vibrant patterns, Hablon was masterfully transformed into elegant contemporary pieces, reflecting both Filipino heritage and modern design sensibilities.

“I’m truly grateful to Ken Macuja Villaflor of Villaflor Creatives Madrid for featuring my Hablon Collections, and to the Ilonggo Association of Madrid for putting a spotlight on my designs,” Gellangarin shared. “Thank you as well for taking good care of our team. More shows to come.”

The event was more than a showcase of fashion—it was a celebration of culture and community, powered by the passion of Filipinos in Spain who work together to uplift and preserve their roots through the arts.

Hector "Totong" Gellangarin: Weaving Culture into Fashion

True “fashion czars” are not born, but made through talent, time, and the merging of art with heritage. They are the living embodiment of a culture, with designs that speak to the past, present, and future. Their creativity is more than just a matter of aesthetics; it is a passion-driven pursuit that brings to life the colors, wealth, and wisdom of a heritage that must be preserved. In Iloilo City, Philippines, one such fashion czar has emerged, blending the region’s rich history and craftsmanship into world-class creations—Hector “Totong” Gellangarin.

Weaving Culture and Couture: Hector “Totong” Gellagarin’s “Costura Filipinas” Shines in Germany
By Ronelo Sanchez Ladiao

On October 27, 2024, Hector “Totong” Gellagarin, an internationally acclaimed fashion designer from Calinog, Iloilo, unveiled his breathtaking couture collection, “Costura Filipinas,” during a stunning fashion show at The Orangerie in Darmstadt, Germany. The event, organized by MRenker Events in partnership with Estilo Filipinas Madrid, celebrated Filipino heritage and the artistry of local fabrics, drawing passionate crowds from the Filipino cultural community and beyond.

Gellagarin's collection was a vibrant homage to the rich traditions of the Philippines, particularly showcasing the intricate beauty of “Hablon,” a handwoven textile from Iloilo. Known for its multi-colored hues and cultural significance, Hablon has been cherished since the 18th century, when it adorned the royal families and wealthy merchants of Europe. This event not only highlighted Gellagarin's talent but also reinforced Iloilo's historical status as the “textile capital of Asia.”

With over two decades of experience, Gellagarin has transformed his deep-rooted passion for fashion into a profound advocacy for cultural preservation. His designs embody the spirit of Ilonggo culture, intertwining modern aesthetics with traditional techniques. Each piece is a testament to his artistic vision, evoking emotion through the harmonious play of colors and textures.

Gellagarin’s journey began in a city steeped in history, where Calle Real once thrived as a bustling hub of trade. His commitment to the art of Hablon weaving reflects his desire to celebrate and elevate his cultural identity. As he showcased his collection on international runways, Gellagarin not only elevated the status of Ilonggo textiles but also inspired others to embrace and preserve their heritage.

The fashion show featured models from diverse backgrounds, all adorned in Gellagarin’s designs, illustrating the universal appeal of Filipino culture. Guests praised the collection for its elegant fusion of tradition and modernity, making it a truly global celebration of artistry.

In a world where fast fashion often overshadows cultural significance, Gellagarin stands as a beacon of hope, illustrating that true artistry is rooted in heritage and identity. His work serves as a reminder that fashion is more than just fabric; it is a narrative that reflects the beauty of one’s culture and history.

As the evening concluded, attendees left with a renewed appreciation for Filipino craftsmanship and the inspiring vision of a designer who continues to make waves on the international stage. Hector “Totong” Gellagarin is not just a fashion czar; he is a cultural ambassador, weaving stories of the past into the fabric of the future.
