The “Apan-Apan” costume is inspired by the grasshopper infestation known in the Municipality of Norala, South Cotabato — once considered a calamity that affected local fields and crops. Over time, however, the community embraced it as part of their culture, where the grasshopper, locally called “Apan-Apan,” became a known delicacy and source of livelihood. This concept reflects the ability of the people of Norala to turn hardship into opportunity and survival into celebration.

The costume features a powerful insect-inspired silhouette with elongated structures that mimic the wings, legs, and body form of a grasshopper. Crafted with traditional T’nalak fabric, the design honors the rich cultural heritage of Mindanao and the artistry of local weaving traditions. The detailed embellishments of beads, bells, and reflective mirrors add movement, sound, and brilliance to the piece, symbolizing the vibrant spirit of the community. The bells create rhythmic motion reminiscent of nature, while the mirrors reflect light like the shimmering fields under the sun.

Overall, the “Apan-Apan” costume is not only a fashion statement but also a cultural narrative — a representation of transformation, adaptability, and the enduring strength of the people of Norala.
