Hurong is an Aklanon Manga-inspired comic created by Persius R. Ruiz. ”Hurong” roughly means mischievous -- Aptly named considering the nature of the characters in the story and basically, the story itself. It is Manga inspired because it utilizes colored outside covers with black & white inside pages – a hallmark of traditional Japanese Manga Comics. Only difference is, you do not read this comic
from right to left unlike Japanese Mangas. The most significant thing that separates this comic from the rest is that it uses “Akeanon” dialect. “Why Akeanon?” you ask. Indeed this is not a smart move if you are aiming for a bigger and wider market, but then again, Hurong aims to capture the interest and rekindle the Akeanon pride in this new Aklanon generation. Hurong is set in a small town called Kalibo after the tragic Typhoon Frank (Fengshen) hit Aklan Province. It tells of the adventures of Jess Asero - a troubled small town boy who came back to his hometown after being kicked-out from college in the big city. He transferred to a local college where he was reunited with his high school friends. He soon found out that even how hard he tries, he would always get into all sorts of trouble. Along with his mates – Rex Francisco and Luther Cortes - join him in his struggles on growing up, gang fights, girls, booze, tears, joy, adventures, misadventures, and everything in-between in their hard knocks life one issue at a time. Hurong is published by Aklan Ads Publishing (the publisher of The Akeanon Lens magazine), printed at RB Print & Copy Center, Pastrana St., Kalibo, Aklan. It is available at Baligyaan Arts & Souvenir Shop located beside RB. Hurong’s resurgence in 2020 aims to market the name as a brand and not just a comics. We will officially start selling Hurong Merchs on 2021.
