Our PATIK Collection returns in new colorways, inspired by the bold tattoo traditions of the pre-colonial Visayas. Reimagining the iconic patterns of the Pintados into handwoven pieces, this collection honors our roots in different hues.

Tattooing culture was predominant in the pre-colonial Visayas. PATIK is a Visayan term for tattoo. Other Filipino terms include batok, batek, patik, or batik. Visayan tattoos were characterized by filled, bold lines, geometric and floral designs on the chest and buttocks, and symbols inspired by nature. We were referred as the Islas de los Pintados or the Islands of the Painted People by the Spaniards. In our own language,

“The Visayans are accustomed to paint their bodies with some very elegant tattoos…”
— an excerpt from Boxer Codex, a 16th Century manuscript on the explorations of East and Southeast Asia.

We have always wanted to create a design that emulated the tattoo tradition of the Visayas. The iconic illustration of the Visayan Pintados in the Boxer Codex highlighted the value of tattooing in our pre-colonial culture. It is believed that the fiercest warriors had the most tattoos, but the tattoo tradition of the past goes beyond warrior culture. Most men and women were tattooed, and it symbolized bravery and beauty.

Here are some more information on the designs and patterns:
Labid – distinctive inch-wide lines, featured front and center in our pieces
Ablay – tattoos on the shoulder
Dubdub – tattoos on the chest up to the throat
Daya-daya – tattoos on the arms
