A Loss Beyond Basketball: Why the Nation Grieved for Rene Baterbonia
This may be a little off-topic from my usual VA content, but as a VA mom with a young son who also plays basketball, I canโt help but share this.
Ever since the tragic accident, Iโve seen countless tributes, prayers, and tears shared online. Even people who never met Rene personally have been mourning his loss.
As a mom of a young basketball player, this tragedy hits differently. My son had the chance to see Rene in person and even take a photo with his idol. When the news broke, my husband, my son, and I struggled to believe it. It felt unreal.
It has been a week, yet every time a post about Rene appears on my Facebook feed while Iโm on duty, I still feel a heaviness in my chest and tears forming in my eyes. his story touched so many of us. Maybe because behind the athlete was a young man with dreams, a son loved deeply by his family, and a life full of promise.
Maybe itโs because Rene was more than just a basketball player.
He was a son who left home, made sacrifices, and embraced opportunities far from his comfort zone in hopes of building a better future for the people he loved.
He was a child who wanted to make his parents proud.
A young man carrying not only a basketball bag, but also the dreams, sacrifices, and expectations of his family.
And as a mother, my heart breaks every time I see Reneโs mom crying, grieving, and searching for answers. No parent should ever have to experience that kind of pain. Losing a child is a heartbreak no mother should ever have to carry.
Perhaps thatโs why this loss feels so personal to so many of us.
When we look at Rene, we see our own children chasing their dreams. We see our brothers, our husbands, our friends, and every hardworking Filipino striving to create a better life for their family.
We see hope.
We see sacrifice.
We see courage.
And in many ways, we see ourselves.
Gone too soon, but never forgotten.
Keep ballinโ in heaven, Mr. MVP. ๐๏ธ๐โค๏ธ
