Philippine Fashion Design Competition - Sining ng Ba'ag 2025: A Resounding Success in Puerto Princesa

The Philippine Fashion Design Competition - Sining ng Ba'ag reached its zenith this year, with a spectacular showcase in Puerto Princesa City. Launched in July under the theme "TIPOS DEL PAIS," the competition paid homage to the artistic legacies of Jose Honorato Lozano, Justiniano Asuncion, and Damian Domingo. Designers masterfully interpreted these masters' works across three distinctive categories: Dibujo Acuarelado, Marahuyo, and Tipos del Pais 2026.

From an initial pool of over a hundred design drawings submitted by talented fashion designers and entrepreneurs, twelve exceptional finalists emerged. These individuals were selected through a rigorous preliminary deliberation by a panel of respected figures, including fashion designers Letlet Veloso, Barge Ramos, Edgar San Diego, Francis Calaquian, Jennica Castro, and Tony Cajucom; TV and Film director Jerome Pobocan; fashion designer and master illustrator Loretto Popioco; former beauty queen Liza Berroya; and actress Liza Lorena.

In August, the twelve designers whose ideas stood out most prominently were announced: Joseph Lopez of Mati City, Davao Oriental; Jeremy Yanson of Puerto Princesa City; Red Gonzales of Sto Tomas, Nueva Ecija; Don Pedro Moises of Batangas City; Jan Garcia of Pasig City; Vorge Cunanan of Imus City, Cavite; Kiko Domo of Cagayan de Oro; Irene Subang of Makati City; Cleo Diomampo of Puerto Princesa City; Sofia Jude Palmejar of Koronadal City, South Cotabato; John Jade Montecalvo of Quezon City; and Edel Cabizares Santiago of Malolos City, Bulacan. This year, three outstanding fashion authorities—Barge Ramos, Jhunnard Jordan Cruz, and Steve de Leon—graced the event as jurors.

The City Government of Puerto Princesa and the Subaraw Festival Committee generously provided accommodations and a reception at the Asturias Citystate. The preliminary judging took place on November 6, with 30 delegates of the Subaraw Festival Queen modeling each of the entries. The SM Mall served as the venue for this year's PFDC - Sining ng Ba'ag culmination night. Honorable Mayor Lucilo Bayron delivered the opening remarks before the commencement of the fashion showing.

Each designer finalist presented their most exquisite interpretations within their respective categories. Sofia Jude Palmejar of Koronadal City, South Cotabato, won the Dibujo Acuarelado category inspired by Jose Honorato Lozano; Red Gonzales of Sto Tomas, Nueva Ecija, triumphed in the Marahuyo category inspired by Justiniano Asuncion; and Jan Garcia took home the top prize for Tipos del Pais 2026 inspired by Damian Domingo.

Three special citations were awarded to outstanding artists: Jan Garcia received the SM choice for Best Designer, Edel Santiago of Malolos, Bulacan, was honored with the Fashion Illustration Honor Award, and Irene Subang of Makati City was presented with the Brilliance Award for Ba'ag Fashion Product Innovation for her copper and ba'ag headpiece.

This advocacy is deeply grateful for the support of the City Government of Puerto Princesa and the Subaraw Festival Committee, which enabled the promotion of raw materials and talented fashion designers from across the Philippines. A special thank you and congratulations are extended to Subaraw Festival Head Carlos Abogado Jr. and Puerto Princesa City Honorable Mayor Lucilo Bayron for championing this beautiful project that promotes ingenuity within the indigenous.

Kudos are also extended to Assistant and Head Coordinator of all Subaraw Festival events Rhaymond Pascual, the dedicated staff—Colleen, Gia, Cha, and Andeng and Pearl—and Infinite Digital Media, Monica, and my favorite Jay Agot. Congratulations to another favorite show director Mike Tagle of MTProduction, Kim, Marion, Andi, and their team, and PICPA - Puerto Princesa for the tabulation of scores.

Finally, thank you to the 3rd edition alumni of the PFDC—Roman, Card, Fern, Adin, Robert, and Jobel—for their presence and unwavering support.

This is GLENN GARRIDO LOPEZ, PFDC Creative Director and Consultant of the PFDC - SINING NG BA'AG 2025, signing off from this year's most fashionable event in the enchanting Puerto Princesa City.

Unraveling the Mystery of José Honorato Lozano: A Master of 19th-Century Philippine Art

The life of José Honorato Lozano (1821-1885) remains somewhat shrouded in mystery, despite his significant contribution to Philippine art. Born the son of a Manila Bay lighthouse keeper and raised in Sampaloc, his formal education is unknown. Recent expert analysis of his works suggests a unique artistic journey: either self-taught or profoundly influenced by Chinese calligraphic masters, whose skill in scroll painting likely shaped his distinctive style.

Despite the scarcity of biographical details, Lozano's talent was recognized early on. As far back as 1850, chronicler Rafael Diaz Arenas hailed him as "a watercolorist without rival." Lozano catered to the growing demand for souvenirs among foreign visitors, primarily American merchants, creating works in the costumbrista tradition—paintings that capture the everyday life and customs of a place.

But Lozano was far more than just a purveyor of tourist trinkets. He stands as a remarkable visual chronicler of 19th-century Hispanic Philippines. His paintings offer an unparalleled glimpse into the lives of both the elite and ordinary Filipinos, meticulously documenting their ways, rituals, significant buildings, costumes, and customs. His art serves as a priceless ethnographic record, preserving a vibrant snapshot of a bygone era. The mystery surrounding his training only adds to the intrigue of his extraordinary talent and lasting legacy.

"DIBUJO ACUARELADO" José Honorato Lozano's artistic style is characterized by a unique blend of realism, detail, and a touch of whimsy. Here's a breakdown:

Letras y Figuras:

- Calligraphic Fusion: Lozano's most famous works are his Letras y figuras, where he uses contoured human figures to form the letters of a patron's name. This technique is reminiscent of illuminated manuscripts, combining the elegance of calligraphy with the storytelling power of visual art.

- Vignettes of Manila Life: Each letter is surrounded by detailed vignettes depicting scenes from daily life in 19th-century Manila. These vignettes showcase the city's architecture, bustling markets, religious processions, and the diverse population, from wealthy landowners to ordinary Filipinos.

- Intricate Detail: Lozano's paintings are known for their meticulous detail. He captures the textures of clothing, the expressions on faces, and the intricate patterns of traditional Filipino architecture with remarkable precision.

Costumbrista Tradition:

- Capturing Everyday Life: Lozano's works also reflect the costumbrista tradition, which focuses on depicting the customs, traditions, and everyday life of a particular place. His paintings offer a window into the social and cultural landscape of the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era.

- Ethnographic Value: Lozano's paintings are invaluable for their ethnographic value. They provide a visual record of traditional Filipino clothing, rituals, and architecture, offering insights into the lives of people from different social classes.

Influence and Style:

- Chinese Calligraphy: While Lozano's formal training is unknown, his works suggest a strong influence from Chinese calligraphy. The way he arranges figures to form letters and his use of delicate brushstrokes point to a deep understanding of this ancient art form.

- Watercolor Mastery: Lozano was renowned for his mastery of watercolor, using vibrant colors and delicate washes to capture the nuances of light and shadow.

Lozano's art is a testament to his skill, his keen observation of his surroundings, and his ability to capture the essence of Filipino life in the 19th century. His unique style, a blend of realism, detail, and a touch of whimsy, continues to fascinate and inspire viewers today.

Justiniano Asunción (18th-19th century) stands as an influential figure in Philippine art history, celebrated for his mastery across diverse genres. His legacy rests on four key pillars: meticulously detailed Tipos del País watercolors, capturing the vibrant tapestry of 19th-century Filipino life; life-sized and miniature portraits that brilliantly rendered the personalities and attire of his subjects, including notable works such as those of Romana Carillo and Filomena Asuncion; powerful religious paintings, notably his life-sized depictions of saints (San Agustin, San Geronimo, San Antonio, and San Gregorio Magno) originally housed in Santa Cruz Church; and finally, his exquisite miniaturist style, showcasing an unparalleled attention to detail in rendering intricate fabrics, jewelry, and embroidery.

This meticulous attention to detail is evident in iconic works such as Coronation of the Virgin, Virgin of Antipolo, and his extensive Tipos del País series, which vividly portray the occupations and costumes of the era. Paintings like Portrait of a Filipino Mestizo Wearing a Salakot and El Mestizo further highlight his skill in capturing the nuances of traditional Filipino attire and the social hierarchy of the time. Sadly, many of his religious works were lost during World War II, yet his surviving pieces remain highly valued, preserved in both public and private collections, ensuring his enduring influence on Philippine art. His contribution is not merely artistic; it's a historical record of a bygone era meticulously rendered with exceptional skill.
