The Story Behind Layag Clothing PH
I’ve always wanted to start a business. It didn’t have to be big. It didn’t have to be impressive. Even if it started small—quiet, unnoticed—that was okay with me. I just wanted something I could build with my own two hands. Something that carried a piece of my heart.
But I didn’t expect that the real push—the moment that gave me the courage to finally take that first step—would come from pain.
A friend of mine from social media passed away. He took his own life. He was someone who, like me, also dreamed of starting a clothing line. But he never got the chance. At his funeral, his family had printed his design layouts—unfinished dreams turned into memorials. I stared at them with a heavy heart. I felt so much all at once: grief, regret, helplessness... but also a strange spark of determination.
Then came another moment—something simple, but it stayed with me. I watched a vlog by Ivana Alawi where she spent a day with fishermen. She tried to live like them—waking before the sun, working through the waves. Their lives were hard. Their future, uncertain. And yet every morning, they sail out again. They keep going, without knowing what the sea will give.
That image stuck with me.
And then, the word came: Layag.
To sail.
That’s it.
That’s the word that lit something in me.
Layag—a simple Tagalog word, but filled with so much meaning. It’s about movement. About courage. About facing the unknown even when nothing is promised. It felt like the perfect name. Not just for a clothing brand, but for a story. For a dream. For a tribute.
So that’s how Layag Clothing PH was born. Out of grief. Out of hope. Out of love for those who sail without certainty, and for those whose dreams were left unfinished. This brand is for them. This brand is for us. This brand is our story.
