Proj 2401 | B. Residence

Current update on our pilot project as of Feb 2026, we had our ground breaking last December 2025. Now we are prepping footing, tie beams and column works. This future retirement house of our client is set to stand in the first half of 2026

SYSTEM COMPONENTS AND FLOW

1. COLLECTION AND FILTRATION
* Roof and Gutters: Rainwater is initially collected on the roof and channeled through the gutter system.
* Downpipe Connection: The downpipe from the gutter is connected to the underground piping system.
* Filter (Implied/At Inlet): Water entering the underground system is typically passed through a filter (often placed at the tank inlet) to remove leaves debris and coarse particles before storage.

2. UNDERGROUND STORAGE
* Rainwater Tank/Cistern: A large underground storage tank is shown designed to hold the harvested rainwater. Storing the water underground helps keep it cool inhibiting bacterial growth.
* Overflow: A pipe exits the tank near the bottom and runs horizontally acting as an overflow to drain excess water to a storm sewer or infiltration area. A rat guard or screen is often included at the end of this pipe (indicated by the angled grate).

3. DISTRIBUTION AND CONTROL
* Submersible Pump: A submersible pump is located inside the tank near the bottom. This pump pushes the stored water up to the house distribution system. A float switch is often connected to the pump to turn it off if the water level gets too low.
* Floating Intake Filter: The pump intake is often equipped with a floating intake filter (shown hanging from a float). This keeps the intake just below the water surface where the water is cleanest avoiding debris at the bottom and scum at the very top.
* Control Unit (Inside House): A control unit (often referred to as a "Rainwater Manager" or "Pumping Station") is located inside the basement/utility room. This unit manages the pump's operation and typically provides a backup function connecting to the main potable water supply.
* Backup Supply: If the rainwater tank runs dry the control unit automatically switches to a small header tank or directly to the municipal potable water supply to ensure continuous function for essential internal fixtures (like the toilet and washing machine).

4. NON-POTABLE USES
The pumped rainwater is distributed to fixtures that do not require drinking-quality water saving on municipal water consumption:
* Internal Use:
* Toilet Flushing: The toilet is connected to the rainwater supply.
* Washing Machine: The washing machine uses rainwater for cycles which is ideal as it is soft water (low mineral content).
* External Use:
* Hose Bib/Tap: An exterior tap on the terrace is connected to the rainwater supply for garden irrigation and cleaning the patio.
This system is an example of sustainable water management significantly reducing a household's reliance on treated drinking water for tasks that do not require it.
