A recent study found that pillowcases can accumulate 17,000 times more bacteria than a toilet seat after just one week of not washing.

Specifically, after a week of use, pillowcases and sheets can accumulate between 3 and 5 million colony-forming units (CFU) of bacteria per square inch.

The study found that common bacteria types like gram-negative rods, which can cause pneumonia; and bacilli, which can cause food poisoning, were present on the bedding.

Our skin constantly sheds dead skin cells, and it also comes into contact with various bacteria and germs throughout the day. When we sleep, these transfer to the pillowcase.

Our skin also naturally produces oil, and we sweat at night. These oils and sweat mix with dead skin cells and bacteria, creating a moist environment that bacteria can thrive in.

The combination and sweat and a warm, enclosed environment of the bed can accelerate bacterial growth.

Pillowcases also attract dust mites, which feeds on dead skin cells, adding to the buildup of allergens and bacteria.

Hot and humid weather also obviously exacerbates bacterial growth!
