Filipino conjoined twins Klea Ann and Maurice Ann Misa have been successfully separated following a “complex” 13-hour operation funded by the Saudi Arabian government on April 23.

In a statement released Friday, the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Manila described the procedure as “one of the most complex cases worldwide,” noting that dozens of specialists from various fields took part in the surgery.

“After eighteen-and-a-half hours of hope and anticipation, the twins’ mother expressed her profound joy at the success of the separation surgery, which has opened for her daughters the prospect of independent life and renewed hope for the future,” it said.

The operation was conducted under the directives of King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

The twins had been in Saudi Arabia since May 2025, where they were admitted to King Abdullah Specialized Children’s Hospital in Riyadh for extensive medical evaluations.

Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Rabeeah, head of the humanitarian program’s medical and surgical team, explained that the case was especially complex due to the positioning of the twins’ heads, the extensive sharing of cerebral venous sinuses, and the intertwining of their brain tissue.

The risks were further heightened by Klea Ann’s cardiac muscle insufficiency, along with severe kidney atrophy and complete renal failure.

Lead surgeon Muatasim Al-Zoubi opted to carry out the procedure in five stages, involving 30 consultants, specialists, and nursing and technical staff across multiple disciplines, including anesthesia, intensive care, advanced imaging, and plastic surgery.

Prior to the surgery, Al Rabeeah estimated the risk level at 50 percent.

He added that the successful operation marks the 70th separation conducted under the Saudi Conjoined Twins Program.

Iginiit ni Palace Press Officer Claire Castro na hindi maaaring magsalita ang Bise Presidente para sa buong hanay ng militar, kasunod ng mga pahayag na iniuugnay sa Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Ayon kay Castro, mahalagang igalang ang malinaw na linya ng awtoridad at representasyon sa loob ng gobyerno. Aniya, ang militar ay may sariling opisyal na tagapagsalita at hindi dapat pangunahan ng sinumang sibilyan, kabilang na ang Bise Presidente.

Binigyang-diin din niya na ang anumang opisyal na posisyon ng sandatahang lakas ay dapat manggaling mismo sa kanilang hanay, upang maiwasan ang kalituhan at maling interpretasyon sa publiko.

Dagdag pa ni Castro, ang ganitong usapin ay sensitibo at may malaking epekto sa pambansang seguridad, kaya kinakailangang maging maingat ang lahat ng opisyal sa kanilang mga pahayag.

Sa kabila nito, nananatiling mahalaga ang koordinasyon at pagkakaisa sa pagitan ng mga sangay ng pamahalaan, ngunit dapat umano itong gawin sa tamang proseso at paggalang sa kani-kanilang tungkulin.

Sa huli, panawagan ni Castro sa mga opisyal ng gobyerno na maging responsable sa kanilang mga salita, lalo na kung ito ay may kinalaman sa institusyong tulad ng militar.
