A carabao in Oriental Mindoro that faithfully served its owner for 32 years was recently nearly sold for slaughter after its body weakened from age and decades of farm labor. The story gained widespread attention after the page Bataan Animal Welfare shared it, quickly going viral and sparking public empathy.

For more than three decades, the elderly carabao plowed fields under the heat of the sun, carried heavy loads, and supported the family’s livelihood. Rain or shine, season after season, it fulfilled its role without complaint, becoming a silent partner in the family’s survival.

Online, many Filipinos expressed deep sympathy for the animal. Some noted that if the carabao were human, it would already be considered a senior citizen, deserving respect, protection, and the right to rest. Others reflected on the difficult reality of farming life, acknowledging that financial constraints often force farmers to make heartbreaking decisions, including selling animals for meat.

Many commenters emphasized empathy and compassion toward animals. One remarked that “the highest act of intelligence is empathy to animals,” while another noted that the carabao had spent 32 years serving without complaint and deserved to enjoy its retirement peacefully, not to be sent to slaughter. Others called for legal recognition, suggesting that domesticated working animals like carabaos should be protected under the Animal Welfare Act and given proper care in old age. Another comment reflected poetically: “When a blind man starts seeing, the first thing he throws away is the walking stick that helped him all his life,” highlighting the symbolic value of the carabao’s lifelong service.

The carabao’s fate recently took a positive turn. An update from Bataan Animal Welfare three days ago confirmed that a buyer from Negros will adopt the animal, providing it a safe home. As a result, the organization has temporarily paused fundraising efforts and will coordinate refunds for those who contributed to the campaign.

Ultimately, the elderly carabao will now spend its remaining years in comfort and peace after a lifetime of service, thanks to the compassion of the community and the adopter.
