Many people know that the pancreas plays an important role in regulating blood sugar levels by secreting insulin. New research published in Nature shows that the brain may also have a key role in regulating blood sugar and the development of Type 2 diabetes. Scientists at the University of Washington in Seattle reviewed a large number of human and animal studies and found that neuronal circuits in the hypothalamus and other parts of the brain enhance glucose effectiveness by promoting glucose uptake by cells. This accounts for about half of all normal glucose uptake, with the other half being driven by insulin secretion from the pancreas. Thus far, diabetes drugs have primarily targeted insulin secretion and sensitivity, which the scientists say only addresses half the problem. Returning the body to normal glucose regulation will also require addressing the damaged neural circuitry, the researchers say.
