This happened a few years ago, but it popped into my head again recently, and honestly, I don't think I should have felt guilty about it for so long.
My youngest sister got married in spring 2021, when weddings were still very small because of the pandemic. It was immediate family onlyโno bridal party, no friends.
At the time, our dad was also extremely ill. He had suffered a severe mental health crisis, had lost around 60 pounds, and spent almost the entire day in bed. My partner and I had actually moved in with my parents to help take care of him.
Somehow, Dad managed to put on a suit and walk my sister down the aisle. It was emotional.
After the ceremony, we had dinner at a restaurant, and then came the speeches.
The groom's brother spoke.
His sister spoke.
His mom spoke.
Then my other sister gave a long speech.
I was already upset with her because during our dad's crisis, she had barely responded when I tried to tell her what was happening. So watching her stand there acting like everything was normal wasโฆ difficult.
Then my mom gave her speech.
She sat down.
And suddenly started making that little hand gesture moms make when they want you to get up.
Apparentlyโฆ
It was my turn.
Except nobody had told me.
I had nothing prepared.
I didn't even know what you're supposed to say in a wedding speech. I'd never given one before, and I'd never even met most of the groom's family.
I stood up anyway.
And completely blanked.
I have no idea what I said. I think it was technically appropriate, but it was definitely not good. ๐
I sat down afterward absolutely mortified.
Years later, my sister mentioned that she'd been upset with our family about things that happened during her wedding.
I apologized and felt guilty about my terrible speech for years.
But looking back now, I finally realized:
If you want someone to give a speech at your wedding, you probably need to tell them beforehand. ๐
Or at least tell them you DON'T want them to speak.
She had a bigger celebration the following year.
I went.
And thankfullyโฆ
Nobody handed me a microphone. ๐
