The gown is made of red wool, with silk lining in the sleeves, decorative fastenings, and a delicate silk trimming at the neckline.

The design was inspired by a fragment of the Tempelhof Altarpiece, a work by painter Jost Haller, dated around 1445. The image in the painting depicts a princess who is part of the scene with St. George and the Dragon.

Behold a queen-worthy 14th-century inspired surcote! ✨

This stunning gown features wide side openings, perfect for showing off the underdress beneath. Crafted from luxurious silk, its bodice and hem are trimmed with faux ermine, just like the elegant details seen in medieval illustrations.

Known in later fashion literature as the “gates of hell”, surcotes with wide side slits were a bold statement of style. In the 14th century, they graced both courtly events and official ceremonies, with heraldic appliqués highlighting the wearer’s noble status.
