“That’s what the future of this population is resting on – 100 adult females is not a lot of animals and these things can go bad pretty quickly,” says Brown.

Take the example of the critically endangered Vaquita porpoise – a species that had 600 individuals about 20 years ago. Now, it numbers just 30. The fragility of small populations in marine mammal species is well known. This is why some scientists are estimating that the North Atlantic right whale could go extinct in as little as 23 years, unless its fortunes improve.

One example is the gentoo penguin. Its main colonies are mostly on islands off the tip of South America, but it is now migrating south to areas that are increasingly ice-free.

For some gentoo penguins, melting glaciers are putting their population at risk. As this scene from Seven Worlds, One Planet shows, brash ice (small blocks of slushy ice) is filling bays, making it harder for gentoos to get to the open ocean to hunt for food without getting crushed and makes avoiding predators like this leopard seal even harder.

In Kilifi, Adelaide Lusambili, a medical anthropologist at Nairobi’s Africa International University, and her colleagues are working with the community to develop interventions for uplifting maternal health.11 These include addressing issues of water scarcity, raising awareness about staying hydrated and reducing workloads during pregnancy, constructing better ventilated homes and cooling spaces in healthcare facilities. Meanwhile, local tree plantation drives, to provide respite from scorching temperatures, are on the rise. For those to succeed, the challenge is picking the right species, planting them at appropriate densities, while avoiding areas with naturally low tree cover.12

In India, several cities and states have drafted heat action plans which involve providing heat advisories when temperatures exceed a certain threshold, creating public awareness about the health impact of heatwaves, and training medical staff to diagnose and treat heat-specific symptoms. “During summer months, we engage in social campaigns,” says Khyati Kakkad, a paediatrician at the LG Hospital in Ahmedabad, a city in western India that developed the county’s first heat action plan in 2013. “We talk to the public about the importance of staying hydrated, how to maintain a cool home environment, and discuss health hazards.” While there’s progress, there’s a lot more to done, she adds, especially to protect vulnerable groups such as pregnant women and infants during heatwaves.

Ol Donyo Lengai in Tanzania is one of Africa’s most active volcanoes, and on it’s northern flank is Lake Natron. This is one of the world’s most toxic bodies of water, yet is home to a magnificent wildlife spectacle - a gathering and breeding place for two million lesser flamingos.

The water temperature of Lake Natron frequently rises above 40°C and is very alkaline due to the sodium carbonate and other minerals that flow into the lake from the surrounding hills. These conditions can burn skin, making it inhospitable for most plants, animals, and humans. The flamingos’ tough skin and scales on their legs prevent burns, and they have a unique ability to drink water near boiling point, and to remove salt from water using their nasal cavity.

The researchers' lives were intertwined with these wolves and Nhorinha was particularly special; she was relaxed in their company. They had spent almost every day with her for almost four years and they adored her. To see such an intimate part of her life, and see what a devoted mother she was, touched all of us greatly.

By the time we had finished filming it felt like the team had made huge steps in understanding these endangered creatures. To aid the researchers in their efforts to protect the wolves was the greatest gift, and we all felt a tangible sense of hope for their future.

But sadly, this wasn’t to last long. Less than a year after filming, Bárbara Couto, the head field researcher, broke the devastating news. Nhorinha and two of her puppies had been found dead on neighbouring farmland. Over the course of a few weeks, they had separately fallen into drainage ditches used to feed crops and drowned.
