All over Borneo you feel like something is missing. At the Kinabatangan River, an incredible array of wildlife from orangutans to pygmy elephants is confined to a small corridor of intact rainforest surrounded by increasing oil palm plantations. It is a fantastic place to see wildlife, but only because the wildlife has nowhere else to go. As reported in The Guardian newspaper, Attenborough himself has successfully fought to save this area from new roads and bridges that would confine the wildlife even more.

“Emperor Penguins are very dependent on the sea ice and everything that can change the stability and the cycle of the sea ice is a potential threat,” says Dan Zitterbart, of the Department of Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, who has studied the species for years. Climate change is one cause, or changes in local oceanographic conditions and the locations of iceberg. For example, if an iceberg is blocking the way to Atka Bay, the penguins struggle to find somewhere to breed.

Scientists expect to see impacts on colonies from decreasing ice. “The problem is that once it happens it can be catastrophic very quickly,” says Zitterbart. “For example, if the sea ice breaks up too early and the penguins did not have time to fledge yet you would lose a whole year and have zero breeding success.”

We’ve all seen the adorable pictures of sea otters holding paws while asleep to ensure they don’t float away from each other. Just in case they’re concerned about the grip of their aquatic counterparts, otters also anchor themselves to each other with seaweed. As many as 100 otters have been spotted floating in the ocean, wrapped in kelp, like some giant furry raft.

Even more impressive, says Goreau, is the rate of “settlement” on Biorock: the appearance of brand new coral colonies from free-floating larvae that attach onto the metal structures without human intervention. Larvae settle onto electrically charged Biorock at a rate almost 26 times higher than uncharged metal.
