There are about 275 different species of bumblebee. The UK has 24, of which eight are common. It's important to understand the features that set bumblebees apart from honey bees. Only one type of honey bee lives in Europe, Apis mellifera, mainly in human-managed hives of up to 60,000 bees. Bumble bees don’t make honey, they only produce a honey-like substance called nectar to feed the few hundred bees in their nest. Unlike honey bees, which dance to direct co-workers to good flowers, bumbles don’t appear to jive.

From their habitat in the cold, icy Arctic, reindeer have evolved unique features that help them to thrive in these harsh environments - and make them the perfect Santa's helpers. Their hooves have the ability to grow and shrink, depending on the season. In colder weather when they need to walk through snow and ice, the pads on their feet shrink, revealing the rim of their hooves. This gives the reindeer the necessary traction and grip to hold onto the slippery ground as they walk. In the warmer months, the pads on their feet expand and soften. As they walk across the ground that has been made wet by all the melting snow, their pads now provide a strong grip. As well as providing traction and stability, reindeer hooves are shaped like shovels, allowing them to dig through snow to get to the food sources underneath.

A group of six males and five lionesses arrived from the surrounding area (including two of Sienna’s daughters whom Charm had helped to raise). They quickly took over a portion of the original Marsh Pride territory. To avoid conflict, Charm and her pride moved further to the north, into an adjoining reserve. Although Charm had already lost her small cubs, she soon gave birth to a new litter of two, and Yaya had three of her own.

However, the area where the pride have moved to is harder to access than their previous territory, so keeping tabs on them has been more difficult. Charm has not been seen for a while, but we hope she is still out there – raising her dynasty.

Despite the demand, there are those working hard to frustrate the supply. Morgan is a Research Fellow at the Lester E Fisher Center for the Study and Conservation of Apes, Lincoln Park Zoo and has studied elephants in Central Africa for many years now. Even though he is practically on the other side of the world, he continues to help monitor activity in Nouabale-Ndoki National Park. There are five study zones, comprising about 425 sq km, which his research teams frequently survey.

Their findings – documenting elephant trails or signs of poachers – are logged via GPS so that Morgan and his colleagues can keep an eye on things from far away.

Designers in Toronto looked to the aerodynamics of the humble maple seed to help improve the efficiency of wind turbines. By observing how the shape of the maple seed allows it to gently course through turbulent air, they were able to redesign turbine blades to cut through the air with greater ease. They created a retrofit design, meaning it can be fitted to existing turbines as well as new ones. It was found to increase the capacity and efficiency of turbines, even in locations where larger blades or smarter software do not.
