Even a lifetime in the most humane zoo will have left animals too affected by years of sheltered existence. Captive animals seldom learn crucial survival skills and often are too habituated to human contact. Lacking a natural fear of humans, they are vulnerable to poachers and ill equipped for life in the wild.

No case makes this more heartbreakingly obvious than the story of Keiko, the orca star of Free W***y (1993). A massive letter-writing campaign demanding his freedom led to Keiko being flown to Iceland in 1999 for release. Unfortunately, Keiko was ill-equipped for survival in the wild. Captured at a very young age and too accustomed to human contact, several attempts to help him join a wild pod failed. In the end, Keiko swam into a harbor in Norway, actively seeking the company of humans. He never managed to integrate with a wild population, struggled to hunt, and eventually died of pneumonia in 2002.

It may appear to be an unfeeling shield of bone, but the shell of the Hawaiian green sea turtle is covered in living skin and needs to be looked after. Many types of fish, such as the striking yellow tang fish, line up to clean algae from their shells, acting like a sort of ‘fish car wash’. The turtles even adopt a specific, ‘standing on tiptoe’ posture, so every inch of them can be dealt with. Some researchers believe that the turtles don’t necessarily appreciate why the algae needs to be removed, or even if it necessarily has to be cleaned at all, and so they partake in this behaviour merely for the pleasant tickling sensation it produces.

Since the BBC Dynasties film crew left Antarctica, the colony of Emperor Penguins has continued to thrive.

They returned to the same location on the same week in 2018 as they did in 2017, the numbers suggest a good breeding year with approximately 12,000 animals.

At time of publishing, the colony is still in its ‘crèching’ period. The dedicated parents are feeding their chicks and many are well-grown. By the middle of December the first young penguins will start to lose their baby feathers and head out to sea, a move that will continue through January. Then, they will remain in the ocean until they become adults, and are ready to reproduce, after three or four years. The breeding adults will return to Atka Bay in April. Sometimes they return a little early and have to wait until the ice freezes before they can colonise their temporary home. In 2017, the penguins spent a couple of days on an ice float, going in and out with the tide until the ice was stable.

Meerkat kittens scrapping and wrestling before being separated by an exasperated adult are all too familiar to any human parent, or indeed anyone who’s been to a supermarket on a Saturday morning. This tussling isn’t just sibling rivalry though, it’s all part of the learning experience. Fiercely territorial, meerkats often find themselves having to defend their area against a rival meerkat group, sometimes in a fight to the death, so the earlier they can deal with a bit of rough and tumble, the better.

Astonishingly, 40% of the world lacks access to safe sanitation.8 The team at change:WATER Labs wanted to do something about that and so they invented the “iThrone” for use in areas with no sewage facilities. It disposes of human waste through evapotranspiration, the same way that plants pull moisture from the soil and release it through their leaves. There is no flush on these toilets; instead a simple membrane evaporates 95% of sewage without using any type of energy.

The spicebush swallowtail caterpillar practices the art of mimicry over multiple life stages.

In their early caterpillar stage, the spicebush swallowtail is dark brown with streaks of white, resembling bird droppings! Unsurprisingly, birds don’t want to eat them.

In the final caterpillar stage, they trick birds into thinking they are snakes. This is achieved by the growth of yellow and black rings that resemble big eyes. And then when the caterpillar senses a bird nearby, they inflate the front part of their body, creating the illusion of a snake tongue. It’s a clever and fierce technique for such a tiny creature, and they’re not alone amongst caterpillars in mimicking snakes. The hawk moth caterpillar also puts up a convincing disguise as a tiny pit viper!7
