MA RA MI

MA RA MI Soulful-brand where multicultural crafts become unique designs by using modern techniques and sustainable fabrics whilst preserving traditions.

Founded in 2016 by designer Andra Clitan, MA RA MI sets its inspiration in the fusion between Romanian traditional costumes with different cultures from around the world. Andra’s passion for craftsmanship goes a long way, starting with her childhood stories and artisan encounters in her native area of Maramures in Transylvania, continuing with extended education at UAD and Central Saint Martins, a

nd teaching at Raffles Design Institute Manila, Philippines and University of Sharjah, UAE, alongside worldwide research travels. Read more about Andra’s projects here. With an emphasis on sustainability, MA RA MI has an important role in preserving traditional techniques and merging influences from different cultures by introducing the latest sartorial approaches and fabrics and empowering self-sufficient and independent communities and artisan practices. OUR STORY

We are proud of our roots and culture, the great heritage of our ancestors, their stories and courage. Working with craftsmen has been the inspiration and motivation behind MA RA MI for over a decade ago. Preserving ancestral crafts is not only the fundament of a nation but also the starting point for contemporary design and multicultural dialog. We praise these values and make them ours by reviving traditional craftsmanship, using elements from traditional cuts and patterns together with modern techniques to tailor them into unique garments that cannot be duplicated. Some of the varied elements you will discover in our creations include felt, hand weaved fabrics and different embroideries, our inspiration starting from Transylvania, and with time growing to include the Middle East, Philippines, Nepal, Armenia, Sri Lanka, Mexico, and more. This journey of authenticity, connecting to our ancestors and rediscovering their crafts, in order to acknowledge, understand and pass it on to future generations is our long term goal, and a work in progress that you’re invited to take part of.

Some dresses are made to be worn.
Others are made to become part of a memory.

We’re endlessly grateful when someone chooses MA RA MI for one of life’s most meaningful moments.

Crafted from h**p, with hand-knitted sleeves made using the beautiful yarns of Wovenbeyond, this dress became part of a celebration of love in Portugal. A meeting of natural materials, skilled hands, and a story that will be carried for years to come.

We believe garments are more than what we wear. They become part of landscapes, embraces, rituals, and new beginnings.

Thank you, , for choosing MA RA MI. We couldn’t imagine a better place for this piece to find its story.

Two regions, one garment.

This dress combines an original blouse from Lăpuș region with a preserved embroidered textile from Negrești (N-W România), creating a dialogue between two traditions in a contemporary form.

MA RA MI approaches heritage as a living material, allowing original textiles and the knowledge they hold to remain present in contemporary wear.

Craft survives through people.

Through the hands that repeat a gesture thousands of times, through knowledge shared across generations, and through communities that continue to find value in making.

This has always been at the heart of MA RA MI.

Some garments carry more than material and technique. They carry the presence of the people who made them, the time invested in them, and the knowledge passed from one generation to another.

This piece began with a safeguarded blouse from the Argeș region, preserving its original hand embroidery and continuing its story through new interventions and a h**p fabric base.

Now available online.

Made from h**p, this piece comes together through multiple hands and practices - with sleeves hand-knitted by Monica Varga using yarns from , and hand embroidery by Dana Dobrani.

It reflects a way of working where each gesture adds to another, and where making becomes a shared language between people, material, and time.

The collection presented at this year emerged through collaborations with artisans and communities from Maramureș and Negrești-Oaș.

Behind these pieces are people, relationships, shared knowledge, and countless hours spent learning, making, and working together. Some garments emerged through co-creation, while others began with safeguarded textiles carrying generations of craftsmanship and memory.

The collection was developed with the artisans Dana Dobrai, Monica Varga, Floare Nistor and Ghereban Marioara, with whom I have worked closely for over two decades, through shared practices, knowledge, and ways of making.

It was also made possible through the ethnographic research and guidance of Mihaela Grigorean, whose deep connection to these communities opened paths to people, knowledge, and experiences that became an essential part of this journey.

What travelled to was never only a collection. It was also a way of making rooted in trust, community,
trust, shared values, and the belief that knowledge grows when it is shared.

Garments that have lived, and garments made to continue that life.

This collection comes from long-term research and from direct work with communities where making is still part of everyday life.

It brings together safeguarded heritage garments and pieces developed in close collaboration with artisans from Maramureș and Țara Oașului (N-W Romania), following the original construction, techniques, and ways in which these garments are made and worn.

The work in Țara Oașului was developed with the guidance of Mihaela Grigorean, whose research and deep connection to the region made it possible to access and understand this context through the people who live and work within it.

Some pieces remain as they are. Others are created from the beginning, through shared processes of making.

This collection will be presented at .
