The weather has not exactly been kind this year with temperatures in January regularly falling below -10c at night. There are signs on the horizon now of the weather improving with night time temperatures only -1c. The glasshouse is now filling up with bulbs as they are brought out of the cold store and forced into flower at around 12-14c. As can be seen from the pictures the Hyacinths,Tulips and Narcissus are growing fast and orders are being dispatched thick and fast.

Earlier this year Sminro grew and sold around 23,000 bulbs including Tulips and Hyacinths. So great was the success and demand that this October Sminro planted 150,000 bulbs into various pot sizes from 7cm up to 14cm.
This was to be a huge challenge as when the bulbs are first planted they have to be stored in a cold room at approximately 6c. The existing refrigerated container was at maximum capacity to work begun in the autumn to construct a cold room inside the farm shed just across the field from the glasshouse.
Ioan Has constructed the building that was to be insulated and an outside company installed not only a fridge motor unit but also a back up heating system so in the event of any sub zero temperatures out side the bulbs would remain at a constant temperature. This cooling period is critical to initiate the flower and they will stay in there until the second or third week of January.

Tonight a lorry has just left the glasshouse in Arpasel with nearly 20,000 plants on board heading for Târgoviște just 50 miles away from Bucharest,

Here in Arpasel today the temperature has nearly hit 25c and the flowering plants are selling well.
People are really getting to know about the glasshouse and customers are coming back again and again.One customer drives from Cluj Napoca to the glasshouse to buy flowers twice a week, a distance of nearly 120 miles!

Yesterday orders for Primroses where prepared ready for delivery. As can be seen in the pictures the weather is bright in Romania at the glasshouse and the flowers look wonderful! There is now plenty of flower on the Primrose and the quality is something to be proud of!
In addition the Ranunculus are just staring to flower and look amazing!

During December after consultation with the bulb suppliers in Holland the temperature was reduced to 4c inside the container to slow the growth down a little. Towards the end of January they will be brought out into the glasshouse where they will receive some heat to force them into flower for the end of February ready for the 2 big celebration days March 1st and March 8th.

Today with temperature outside at around 4c the temperature inside the coldstore was a very nice 8c.
The Hyacynth bulbs that were planted at the beginning of November have made good root growth and the growing tip of the bulb is starting to grow.
On top of each tray of bulbs a foam mat is placed and then another tray is placed on top of that. The foam protects the growing tip whilst the overall weight pressing down keeps the bulb in the compost and stops it from lifting out.
