War Memorials of Former Yugoslavia

“Echoes of Utopia” series by Christian Houge

This series was created using the collodion (“wet plate”) process; an antique process that was once the dominant form of photography from the mid 1850s to the early 1880s

The process simplified involves pouring a liquid mixture (collodion) over a metal plate (“wet plate”), submerging the plate in a bath of silver, loading it into a camera, and then quickly developing the wet plate in a portable dark room. The entire process must be completed in the span of minutes and is prone to all sorts of happy accidents

“The technique and visual language stand in contrast to our AI-driven world, where the boundaries of what is authentic are becoming less clear. In this sense, the project is also a tribute to the origins of photography and to the importance of the human handmade photographic process” - Christian Houge
