1964 New York World’s Fair

An event that occupied 600 acres of New York City during Summer 1964

The fairgrounds in Queens featured hundreds of pavilions showcasing midcentury American achievement. Fast cars, space rockets, and corporate technology

The 1964 Fair was the first time millions of people experienced video calling, IBM computers, and Ford Mustangs. It was also the first time millions of people saw the New York Mets — who began play at a new stadium on the fairgrounds

The 1964 World’s Fair is forever ingrained in the memories of New York boomers. Relics of the 1964 Fair are still visible from multiple highways in Queens — providing millions of passersby a trip down memory lane

The World of Russian Street Music (“Blatnaya Pesnya”)

A subgenre of Russian music depicting criminal culture and underworld. Blatnaya pesnya or blatnyak songs have a long folk history — dating back to the Russian Empire and extending through the Soviet Union

Blatnyak are often composed as ballads with themes of man vs. state and struggles in the criminal underworld

The genre grew and mutated in the gulag system with many secret recordings being shared in the underground

Traditional blatnyak is a dark waltz: with a marching time signature and instrumentation (accordions, violins)

In the post Soviet era, the ballad feel and marching drive of blatnyak remains. But the conventions have expanded into new genres and instrumentations.
