Few people know that there is Circassian community in Israel with around four thousand representatives in it. The major part of them live in villages Kfar-Kama and Rehaniya. The historic homeland of the Circassians is northwestern Caucasus. The question is how the Caucasian ethnic group found itself in Israel?
The answer lies in the distant past. The ancestors of today's Israeli Circassians left their homeland after defeats in numerous Caucasian wars and because of the policy pursued by the Russian Empire in the 19th century. The Ottoman Empire saw them as experienced fighters and allowed them to settle in sparsely populated areas of the Empire, including the Galilee.
During the expedition we were lucky to talk to some members of the Israeli Circassian community and to see their traditions and absolutely stunning national costumes.

Yasser Hirbawi is over 80 years old now, he speaks little English and doesn’t speak Jewish at all. He owns the last in Palestine fabric, producing men headdress keffiyeh. For five decades, Yasser Herbawi had been the only Palestinian manufacturer of keffiyehs. After the establishment of the Palestinian Authority it was extremely hard to sell and export goods because of the market shrinkage. Today the textile Factory of Yasser exports its production to the East Jerusalem, the United States, France, Germany and other countries. At the same time, Yasser Hirbawi admits that the volumes are not the same. But to be honest, looking at the rows of weaver looms, non of which is standing idle, you cant’ be so pessimistic. For the new collection we bought there two fabrics with traditional keffiyeh pattern.
