Scott Burge serves on Belay Global's financial advisory committee and spent 6 years on the board, because this work matters to him in a way that's hard to put into words.

When he first heard about Belay Global, what stopped him were the personal stories. Single mothers doing whatever it took to keep their families alive.

Scott knew that story. His parents divorced when he was young, and he watched his mother struggle every day just to help them survive. When he heard more about the burdens these women in Rwanda were carrying, he knew he had to be part of the answer.

When he finally traveled to Rwanda, he expected to see hardship, and he did. But what he didn't expect was the beauty. The landscape was gorgeous, but most of all, the women themselves were beautifully building their lives back with their own hard work and diligence.

Pictured here is Scott with Redempta, one of DuHope's artisans and his prayer partner, during his last visit to Rwanda. Warm, resilient, and full of joy in a way that stays with you long after you've come home.

Eleven years ago, Juliette and Victoria walked through DuHope's doors for the first time.

Last month, they opened the doors to their own restaurant: Iganze, a Kinyarwanda word meaning to prevail, to overcome.

Just blocks from our workshop, they served their first lunch to the artisans and staff they trained alongside for a decade.

Steady, monthly support carried them from their first counseling session to this.

This summer, Belay Global Board Chair Jennifer Glassley Ray wore her DuHope sling all over Vienna. A small reminder, she said, of why she does this work.

Jennifer joined the Belay Global board in 2023. Most days, her role is simple: ask good questions, and make sure every dollar is doing exactly what it's meant to do. She hasn't traveled to Rwanda yet, but she sees the numbers behind the stories. What it costs to guide a woman from her first counseling session to her first paycheck. What it means when that support is steady instead of one-time.

A monthly gift of $25 gives our staff in Rwanda the confidence to plan ahead and keep showing up for these women. This summer, the goal is 35 new Hope Builders by August 15.

Frankie Richardson, a Belay Global board member, is pictured here with her three sons. She's a hospice nurse case manager, and her work has taught her what it means to show up for people in the moments that matter most. That belief is why she gives monthly to DuHope.

Frankie grew up with Jamie Boiles and knew she'd moved overseas, but didn't understand what she was building until about a year ago, over dinner, when Jamie told her about the women and children whose lives were changing through DuHope. Frankie knew right away she was supposed to be part of it.

What moves her most is the generational impact. When a woman gains safety, education, and a steady income, her children grow up with a completely different story. As a mom of three, that's the kind of lasting impact Frankie wants to be part of.

She hasn't made it to Rwanda yet, though she hopes to soon. Until then, giving monthly is how she stays connected to this work, and how she knows she's part of something bigger than herself.

Nancy Hurst, a Belay Global board member, still remembers her first visit to Rwanda and meeting the women of DuHope.

One of the artisans made her a beautiful pair of fringe earrings. When Nancy tried making a simpler pair herself, she quickly understood just how much skill goes into every piece they create.

But what's stayed with her the most is Juliette. She was part of DuHope's first cohort and has been Nancy's prayer partner for several years. Watching her grow into a confident woman who provides for her family with dignity has been a gift.

That's why Nancy is a Hope Builder.

Eleven years later, this photo still stops me in my tracks.

Not because of the 👠🥿👡—but because of what they represent.

Nobody knew that this small gathering would become 11 years of women finding healing, community, practical skills, and hope.

Real change rarely starts with something impressive. It starts with someone willing to show up.

Today, we’re asking 30 more people to show up as Hope Builders with a gift of $25 a month so another generation of women can keep walking through that same door.

Every woman we work with in Rwanda deserves a path to work that lets her keep her dignity. Counseling. Education. A skill she can build a life on.

Francine's story is one I think about often.

She dropped out of school in 2nd grade, came to Kigali with nothing, and eventually entered survival s*x work to feed her 8 children. She sold vegetables illegally on the street, running from authorities. Every day was survival.

Then she found DuHope. And something shifted.

DuHope didn't just give her resources -- they helped her believe that she had a role in her own future. Today, her children are in school. Local leaders protect her. On Rwanda's national Thanksgiving Day, her community honored her for her resilience and bravery.

Her dream is still alive: to own a big vegetable shop in Kigali.

Hope is built, not given. That's what the Hope Journal is about -- a free 5-day devotional from DuHope Rwanda.

Most people think hope is a feeling. It isn't.

Hope is the belief that the future can be better than the past, and that you have a role in making it better.

That second part is what makes it powerful. And for women who have been trapped in survival s*x work by poverty and circumstances beyond their control, helping them reclaim that belief -- that they have a role, that their future is not written yet -- is the entire foundation of what we do at DuHope Rwanda.
