Unfortunately, after 17 years of providing historical sewing content and community, Foundations Revealed is closing its doors. We have gone into liquidation as of 10/6/25.

The current economic situation in the US has had a significant impact on our business and, while we have tried to implement changes since new management took over at the end of 2024, due to falling membership numbers we are unable to continue to provide the content our Stitchlings deserve while covering our costs.

The website will remain live until a formal closing date is announced and all those with annual memberships can request a refund on a pro-rated basis.

If you would like to keep up with the work of our mentors, you can find them here: Vanyanís, Brooklynne Michelle Couture, Black Orchid Atelier, Woodsmoke and Words Cosplay

Have you ever wondered what the inside of an 18th-century gown looks like? shares behind the seams of a late 1780s Robe à l’Anglaise from her personal collection!

At some point in it's history, the gown was turned into a separate bodice and petticoat, and the outer is constructed in silk with a linen lining. Sophia found the bodice has been b***d with baleen, with the center front bones placed at the internal lacing strips possibly made from iron.

If you would like to check out some more swoon-worthy images of this gown and read about Sophia's recreation of this piece, the two-part article series is available in our archive now! Membership starts at just £20 per month - head to the bio to get started!

🧵Update on the Foundations Revealed Competition – We’d Love Your Input 🧵

As many of you know, the deadline for our annual Foundations Revealed competition is fast approaching. We’re so proud of the creativity and dedication this event inspires every year—it's always a highlight for our team and community alike.

However, in the spirit of full transparency, we wanted to share that running the competition is a significant investment for us. Given the current economic climate and our desire to manage costs responsibly, we are considering postponing this year’s event.

Before making any final decisions, we would really appreciate hearing from you. Whether you’ve entered the competition before, were planning to participate this year, or just follow it with interest, your feedback will help us plan future competitions in a way that better serves the community and is sustainable for us.

🧵Friday Finery🧵

Jacket, Late 18th c., French

This stunning jacket is a wonderful example of that often-repeated costumer saying - piecing IS period!

While this jacket would be designed to be worn over a gown, lining the garment was still an essential step in it's longevity, and construction. The outer of the jacket is made from a luxurious striped silk, however, the inside is lined with a time capsule of fashionable materials from years gone by, with even the tiniest patches of fabric utilized to their full potential!

Studying corsets that have been preserved in the extensive archive of the Symington Corsetry Collection uncovered some examples of stitching where speed was prioritised over what we would now consider a more secure sewing technique.

This sateen health corset of 1900 was constructed with a split steel busk, and we would usually reinforce the stitches between the busk loops by starting and stopping the seam between each individual loop, back stitching at both ends. However, this part of the corset has been manufactured with a complete seam between the busk placket and outer corset at the centre front, with stitches cut to create the gaps for the busk loops to pass through - with no sign of any reinforcement! This is certainly a much faster way of completing this step, however, in a high-stress area like a corset closure, it could create points of weakness.

Mentor Constance put this technique to the test in a sample and found that our modern cotton sateens aren’t sturdy enough to make this a successful method. However, the examples we see from the period have extremely small machine stitches, which help prevent unravelling of the seam. So, while this busk insertion technique isn’t as effective with today's materials, to add a touch of authenticity to your corset, shorten your stitches!

We explore how the spectacular Victorian corsets from the Symington archive are constructed in this month’s workshop, plus how to recreate the techniques at home – and we’ll be back for part 2 in July with our Mentors, Constance and Lowana. To watch, become a member at the link in the bio – membership now starts at £20 per month.

🧵Meet the Makers🧵

We have some inspo to start your week off! 🤩This stunning gown was created by our Chief Operations Officer, Christina, for this year's Prior Attire Victorian Ball.

Based on the pictured fashion plate from the 1870s, the gown has some incredible embroidery, which Christina created with an embroidery machine.

Do you use waist tapes in your corsetry? 🧵

Waist tapes are installed on the inside of a corset and are useful to provide structure and support, whilst helping to prevent stretching of the corset over time. They can sometimes be visible from the outside of the corset, which is something to consider.

You can find tapes in corsets, bodices, and gowns - with corsets in particular, they are held in place at the centre front and back, whilst stitch lines from boning channels or top stitching intersect the tape to keep it anchored.

Waist tapes are generally made of a sturdy woven twill tape for strength. In the final images, you can see some historical examples that have been printed with details of the boning materials used, and an example that has it's tape covered with lining fabric for aesthetic purposes.

If you would like to learn more about Victorian corset construction, our latest workshop and tutorial session exploring corsets from the Symington Corsetry Collection is now available to members - head to the bio to get started!
