*Talking Threads!*

Flossing is the decorative embroidery often seen at the top and bottom of corsets. It is placed at the ends of boning channels to strengthen them, protecting the fabric from the wear of the bones moving within their channels.

This tutorial will teach a simple teardrop-shaped flossing technique.

Save this post for later - our full tutorial archive is available now to members of FR!

Did you know…🧵

“The ideal ergonomic height for a cutting table is approximately at the elbow/waist. This is on average about 36-40” (90-100cm). Hey, you know what else is usually that height? Kitchen countertops! So, a set of reclaimed cabinets can be a great base for your cutting table. Or, maybe you have a kitchen island that can double as a cutting surface!"

Gloves, Late 18th century, British

"The embroidered figure on these gloves is a lady in court dress complete with the fontanges, the hairstyle in vogue during the first decade of the eighteenth century. It is unusual to find a historical costume depicted on a fashionable accessory. It must have amused the lady who wore the gloves to compare the style of her grandmother’s day to the attire of her own time." - The MET Museum

This may look like a full-size, beautifully constructed, couture Dior ensemble, but it’s actually much smaller!

“This is a quarter-scale couture reproduction of a late 1940s Christian Dior day ensemble. This dress is shaped with soft pleats and gussets inset into seams, as Dior tried to avoid darts where possible. The jacket is lined in grey polka dot silk.
These scaled copies use the same fabrics and show the same superb craftsmanship as their full size equivalents. Wholesalers would buy the copyrights to couture dresses so that they could sell modified ready-to-wear copies. It is thought that these quarter-scale dresses were sold alongside the patterns to show how the dress looked when made up.” - The V&A

Practice makes perfect!

This gorgeous sampler of stitching was completed by Edith Prescott when a student at the Woolwich Polytechnic Institute 1923-25. The full folder contains examples of buttonholes and fastenings, boning casings, pin tucking, shirring and many more essential skills a dressmaker in this period would be required to master.

Edith later went on to be a lady’s maid, where she no doubt would have put these skills into action.

Pantomime is a staple of British Christmas celebrations, originating in 16th century Italian Commedia dell'Arte. Originally featuring a variety of entertainments and a cast of stock characters, panto today focuses on comedy, musical entertainment, and audience participation in the form of classic fairytales and led by a cast of celebrity performers.

One thing panto has always been famous for is wonderful costuming! These designs were created in 1894 by Wilhelm for the characters Holly, Mistletoe, Jack Frost, and Ivy in the pantomime Santa Claus, as performed at the Royal Lyceum Theatre.

Have you heard of Catherine Griswold?

We don’t often hear of women inventors in the world of corsetry in the 1800s, but Catherine’s 31 patents made her the most prolific female inventor of her century!

With patents registered over a span of 23 years, Catherine's inventions were concerned with the design and functionality of corsetry, including a skirt supporting corset, intended to make it easier for the wearer to manage the heavy skirts of the day.

“The object desired to be obtained is to produce a waistcoat or corset made in two parts, and clasped or laced together in the front and back, and so shaped as to closely, neatly, and easily tilt and support the body, and so that when the lacing is tightened the front of the shoulders will be drawn back more or less, as desirable, greatly to the support and comfort of the person; also, to support the clothes or skirts, which usually are supported by the hips.”

And if you would like to know what it’s like to wear a Griswold corset, Sandra Stuart re-created an 1883 design for the FR archive! The article is available to members now – head to the link in the bio to join!

*Friday Finery!*

This fluffy eiderdown coat is possibly the cosiest winter coat in history!

The V&A describes a cape made from the same technique like so:
“An ingenious but simple way of manipulating birds' down has been employed in the construction of this mantle. It is made of cream silk entirely covered with links formed from stranded down shaped into roundels with cotton binding. The borders are trimmed with down, and the tufts have been hand-stitched to a cotton ground, to which are attached pendant down trimmings. The mantle is almost weightless and its silky, sumptuous material is incredibly soft to the touch.”- The V&A Museum
