NATURAL INDIGO IS MAGIC
HANDWOVEN BIG MERINO SHAWL
Dyeing with indigo is a slow and patient process, where the leaves are left to ferment and mature – much like a sourdough starter. After several days of careful tending, the characteristic deep blue begins to emerge – a colour carrying centuries of history and craftsmanship.

We are proud to work with some of the world’s true masters of indigo: Norwegian Axel Becker, American textile professor Yoshiko Wada and the cooperative in the Himalayas and Kerala.

INDIGO IS MAGIC!💙🌿

BEHIND THE SCENE
We’re in luck! Just as we’re about to photograph the autumn cashmere collection from Nepal—featuring lovely layered looks—the sun comes out.☀️

We’re out on Färingsö, just outside Stockholm, where the photographer, Mats, lives. Suddenly, a neighbor rides by on horseback... as if on cue... It turns out to be a wonderful day with models Emil and Elena, production assistant Bettan, stylist Monica, and photographer Mats.

WHY IS 100% CASHMERE WOOL A SUPER MATERIAL?
Cashmere wool comes from the under ”down” wool of goats, the fine wool closest to the body. It is the wool that warms the goats at high altitudes.

🙏Cashmere fiber is ”Hypoallergenic” which means a product with low allergenic potential and makes it less likely to cause an allergic reaction compared to other products.

🙏The cashmere garment has the ability to insulate, breathe and warm.

🙏Cashmere is also a so-called hygroscopic fiber, which essentially means that it absorbs water from the air. This helps regulate the body in both hot and cold temperatures by absorbing and releasing moisture based on the surrounding environment.

About cashmere & pashmina.
Like many exclusive materials and products, trade and manufacturing have their origins in the trade routes between Asia and Europe for thousands of years. Cashmere has been produced in Mongolia, Nepal and Kashmir for thousands of years. The fiber is also known as pashm (Persian for wool) or pashmina (Persian/Urdu word derived from Pashm) due to its use in handmade shawls from Kashmir. References to wool shawls appear in texts preserved from between the 4th century BC and the 11th century AD. The name comes from a specific breed of goat “Changthangi” from Kashmir, where production began in the 13th century. The history of Kashmir wool’s journey from Kashmir to Persia, Paris, Scotland, China, the USA is both intricate and very interesting.

YAK AND MERINO WOOL SHAWL FROM HIMACHAL PRADESH – HANDMADE
Wearing a garment made of yak wool is something a little “extra”.

The yak is a long-haired ox native to Himalayan high plateaus over 2500 metres. Its wool has been used for thousands of years by nomads in the area and is today considered rather exclusive as it is sometimes difficult to get hold of. The wool is gathered from yaks around the Kullu region where our supplier operates. To thin the dense and warm wool, we mix it with soft merino wool also sourced from the area. All carding, spinning and weaving are done on traditional wooden looms called KHADDI. The weaving technique is unique and is passed down from generation to generation. The weavers belong to their own little clan.

Dyeing is done with environmentally adapted modern pigments which fix to the fibres and retain their luminosity for a long time.
Wear this unique shawl with pride all year round.

OUR HEART IS WITH OUR FRIENDS IN NEPAL❤️
We are following the reports and are in contact with our friends in Nepal. We know they are safe and that the work in the affected areas is intensive.
🙏

The pictures are from our recent trip to Mustang in Nepal. We encountered a stunningly beautiful landscape, a long history of trade routes through the area and all the friendly people who showed their crafts and offered tea.

Our heart is in Nepal❤️

THE BLUE GOLD - NATURAL INDIGO
Indigo is the one of the oldest plant dyes in existence and can be traced back to the ancient kingdoms of the Middle East.

It is a deep blue dye extracted from the green leaves of a variety of plants.
The earliest direct evidence for the use of indigo dates to around 4000 BC and comes from Huaca Prieta, in contemporary Peru.
Pliny the Elder mentions India as the source of the dye after which it was named.
It was imported from there in small quantities via the Silk Road. For centuries, Indigo was a valuable commodity that was traded across the globe, earning it the name ‘Blue Gold’.

Unisex shirts and shawls from our friends in Munnar and Cochin, Kerala- in our Spirit design.
All created with the magical process of natural indigo from the cultivated plants. 🌿

We know that our friends in Nepal are safe.
We are monitoring all information and are in direct contact with our local contacts and small-scale suppliers. We know many people are wondering if they can contribute; right now, major organizations are on the ground and accepting assistance.

The photos are from our recent trip to Mustang and Kathmandu in Nepal. The trips is made with the help of Jenny and BJ. Jenny is reporting from Kathmandu to Swedish news and media and serves as our source of information.

You can read more about our work in Nepal in the book WEAVING THREADS on our web www.spiritofthreads.

Our friend Lama Geche Pema Dorje is having a speech on Fryshuset Monday 7 sept. Welcome. Fryshuset
