Dapatakencen 👣
Dapatakencen means barefoot in Mandinka.
This collection comes from a place many of us know well a time when life was simple, but the memories were rich.
Growing up, shoes were not something we wore all day. They were precious. We saved them for school, Eid, church, family visits, or special occasions. The moment we came home, those shoes went safely under the bed, and we ran straight back outside barefoot.
Bare feet carried us everywhere. Across sandy compounds, village roads, football fields, farms, and family gatherings. They carried our dreams long before we knew where life would take us.
And of course, there were the thorns.
You’re running at full speed, laughing with your friends, thinking about nothing but the game… then suddenly
OUCH! 😭
A sharp thorn or tiny stick goes straight into your foot.
Everything stops.
You hop on one leg, trying to be brave while your friends gather around to inspect the damage. Someone runs to find a pin. Someone else claims they’re a doctor. Then comes the painful part everybody trying to pull the thorn out while you scream and tell them to be careful. 😂
If your friends couldn’t get it out, there was only one solution: run to Grandma or Grandpa.
You place your foot on their lap, and with years of experience, they slowly remove the thorn using a sewing pin while telling you to stop moving. Somehow, it always hurt and felt comforting at the same time. ❤️
Those moments were never just about the thorn.
They were about friendship, family, community, and the people who were always there when life hurt a little.
That is the story behind this design.
The two bare feet placed at the center of this t-shirt represent more than childhood memories.
They represent humble beginnings. A reminder that no matter how far we travel in life, we should never forget where we started.
This piece is for everyone who remembers where they came from.
Because true wealth is not forgetting our roots
