We held our first virtual Mandarin Read & Play workshop this weekend, exclusively for our dear 大树下 children. :)

Thank you all for participating!

It was a coincidence that the book we read today is translated from "From Head to Toe", by Eric Carle.

Thank you Mr Eric Carle, for the inspiration you have brought to generations of children, through the lovely picture books you authored and illustrated. ❤

How has P2HA been for all of you?

So heartened to receive pictures from mama who has been spending her off-days creating the 大树下 experience for her children near home.

We can't wait to resume our outdoor read and play sessions with all the children!

Meanwhile, stay safe and take care everyone!

Parents, please know that whatever you are doing for your children in this period, you are doing your best and your children appreciate you. :)

Recently saw some parents discussing about whether it is important to learn character stroke names and character stroke orders (笔画笔顺) in the facebook group.

At 大树下, we believe in building a strong foundation in character strokes before moving on to writing more complex chinese characters.

Here is a fun activity for kinesthetic young learners to practise character strokes and character stroke order, with simple chinese characters. All you need is some painters tape or masking tape, and a little bit of space.

After introducing the word 女 to the children, the children helped to stick the masking tape on the floor, following the correct stroke order. Next, the children used a toy car to practise 'writing' the word, again following the correct stroke order. Parents or teachers can guide these tasks by naming each stroke, in this case 撇点,撇,横。

Some children may wish to explore moving the car along the tape in different directions first - just give them some time to explore before prompting them to try tracing the strokes in the correct order. You may also write numbers on the tape to serve as additional visual cues if a child has difficulty following the correct stroke order.

The activity can be extended by lining toys up along the strokes in the correct order.

We had so much fun taping, moving and 'writing' on the tape!

If you have a preschooler who just started learning about character strokes or who need more practice with character strokes, do give this a try and let us know how it goes! :)

The end of April marks 2 months since 大树下 resumed our outdoor read and play sessions.

To the families who travel from the East or the West to join us in the North of Singapore, the mama who was heavily pregnant, the mama who has a newborn baby at home, the working mamas who spend their precious off-days at 大树下, the mama who dislikes going outdoors - kudos for getting out of the house because you know your children need it. 👍🏻

Thank you for believing in our program, and for the encouraging words and support.

When a child says, "Mama, this school is very nice!" , when a mummy tells us her child refuses to go for any form of enrichment class but wants to come for 大树下 again, when the children look forward to their next session, we know we have to keep this going.

Our May sessions are fully booked! But feel free to drop us a dm if you are keen to be part of our community, and we will keep you in mind if there are available slots in the future. :)

Chanced upon the Sing September project initiated by . Can't agree more that songs are a great and fun way for children to learn languages!

As the Mid-autumn festival is approaching, we wanted to introduce to our kids a song related to the moon. We decided on the chorus of this pop song as the tune is catchy and upbeat - 私奔到月球 by Mayday. The words in the lyrics are also surprisingly simple - many can be recognised by pre-schoolers!

We sang the chorus together a few times and played with this word puzzle game. Mr 5yo could recognise many of the words. Ms 2yo was happy to help pasting the words to fill up the blanks - she miraculously pasted many of the words in the correct blanks by sheer chance. Haha!

Thank you for initiating this fun project, and parents and educators who shared ideas and songs. We had so much fun.
