How to take care of a child when they are sick?

Look out for increased crying, fussiness, a loss of appetite and reduced activity levels as telltale signs that your child may not be feeling well.

1. Keep them hydrated

A sick child needs to drink a lot, about 4 to 5 cups of liquid a day. This can be cold water, milk, fruit juice or soup. Dehydration makes them fatigued, restless, and sicker. Older kids may benefit from herbal teas with honey and lemon. If your child is sick, he/she may not have the same appetite that he/she typically does. Provide nutritious snacks that may be readily available throughout the day without the expectation of feeding a full meal until the child feels better. Make sure that these are easy on the stomach.

2. Keep your child comfortable

Dress your child in lightweight, breathable clothes. Keep the room airy and cool. If the child has a mild fever, you can try washing the sweaty body with a warm water sponge. Soothe your child by cuddling and talk to him/her gently with encouragement. You can also give your child a soft massage to ease any aches or pain.

3. Get enough rest

Listen to your child when they are sick. Try getting them enough rest by reminding them that sleeping will help them feel better faster. You can read them a story, or play some light music and encourage them to nap. Avoid activities that are too stimulating. Instead, try to give your child time for quiet games, stories, company and comfort.
