Four Cow Farm was started by a Mother, Grandmother and former Midwife (with hundreds of deliveries to her credit) who began making Hand-Crafted All-Natural Creams, Lotions and Balms for her own Grandchildren with her own Original Recipes and the very Best Natural Ingredients she could find. Started in her own Farm Kitchen, Nanna's Labour of Love began as a Gift to her Two Grandchildren (one of who

m had eczema). Today, the Whole Family is Committed to making Nanna's Hand-Crafted Traditional Range of 100% Natural Baby, Mother's and Family Skincare from our 100% Green Energy farm on the Blackall Mountain Range of South East Queensland, Australia. And Every Drop of Water used is Pure Australian Mountain Rainwater, Collected and Purified right on the Farm! Our Farm is shared with Alpacas, Chooks, and Four Bovine Lodgers (after whom the Farm is named). And, as we are part of the 'Land for Wildlife' Scheme, we get Wallabies, Kangaroos, Koalas and Kookaburras wandering through daily.

👩‍🦱 The skin on your face is the thinnest skin on your body. In fact, the thinnest skin you have, which is around your eyes, is 80 times thinner than the thickest on your body (can you guess where that is? hint: you stand on it).

Yet your face gets exposed to more skincare and cosmetic products than any other part of your body. Washes, moisturisers, toners, peels, lipstick, foundation, blush and eyeshadow, the list is endless. So, it’s not surprising that skin allergies often appear first on the face. On top of that, if you’re pregnant, your skin reacts even more to external irritants, and as we age, our skin gets thinner and that shows up first, again on the face (hello crow’s feet :( ).

So sensitive facial skin shouldn’t be a surprise after all it goes through and it makes sense that your face needs more care and pampering than anywhere else. One of the most crucial elements of every skincare regimen is your facial wash but did you know that most washes actually contain ingredients that aggravate and sensitise facial skin?

So we wanted to put together a check-list of four ingredients to avoid in your facial wash if you have sensitive skin -

1. Fragrance: the number 1 skin allergy trigger. Not surprising as the average fragrance is a combination of at least 100 chemicals (!).
2. Essential oils: one of the most common skin sensitisers in natural skincare. But they’re often used in overly high amounts in skincare and, on sensitive facial skin, that can be a potent aggravator.

💦 What’s the one thing you really want to avoid in a wash? We’ve become so used to this that we don’t give it a second thought when it shows up in popular brands of wash we use. But, the one thing you really shouldn’t see in a wash that you use on your skin is... foam. Yes, it might sound strange but there’s a good reason to avoid washes that foam - here’s why:

Firstly, what is foam actually? It’s excess surfactant (i.e. the cleansing element of the wash or soap) which goes around air rather than dirt, grime or sebum. So when you use a wash that generates lots of foam, what you’re seeing is what’s NOT being used by your skin. And that excess cleansing action is what makes a wash overly harsh or stripping to the skin. Think laundry detergents, dishwashing liquid or car shampoos - any cleanser that generates a ton of foam is designed to strip dirt and grime from surfaces. Effective though they are, they are most certainly not healthy for the skin!

So when it comes to washes, we always say ‘go by feel, not foam’. If you’ve tried our Castile washes you can immediately feel its effects on your skin - you don’t need foam to tell you that it’s doing its job. A luxurious blend of extra virgin oils and traditionally-made soap, our castile washes work gently, cleansing as they should without stripping the skin, leaving it moisturised, clean and healthy.

🌳 We’re very fortunate to be located in a particularly beautiful part of the world (google ‘Maleny’). We have wonderful wildlife, valleys and rich pastures which surround Four Cow Farm and that makes us especially mindful of how important it is to make products which don’t harm the environment. So it’s an interesting benefit that, because we make our skincare on our farm, we need to take extra care in making sure there is nothing harmful in our skincare.

Have you ever thought about where your skincare goes when it disappears down the drain? Well we definitely do! Most of our ‘grey’ water from the production of our skincare goes straight into our paddocks, which is why every ingredient we use is chosen very carefully - i.e. we can’t have that run-off affecting the health of the animals in and around our environment.

It’s becoming clear that chemicals in commercial, mass-produced skincare have an adverse effect on the environment. There’s the run-off from fragrance ingredients causing disturbing changes in fish and sunscreen chemicals causing damage to our coral reefs that is well researched. All of this from the build-up of millions of skincare products being manufactured, used and washed out into our ocean systems.

So, when you next use your cleanser or shampoo or put on your lotion, spare a thought about where it goes after it’s left you and perhaps do your bit for the environment by choosing only all-natural skincare.

Did you know that we see many customers with eczema? Although it is a common skin condition, there are two types that are most commonly seen - atopic eczema and irritant eczema.

Atopic eczema is characterized by episodes of flare-ups and subsiding, and it usually starts before the child reaches six months of age. Sometimes, it's caused by specific allergens, but other times it can occur for no apparent reason, which sets it apart from irritant eczema, where there is always an allergen involved.

Fortunately, as children grow older, the episodes of atopic eczema tend to improve, and they often go away completely by the age of five although most continue to have sensitive skin into adulthood which requires more care and attention. It’s the largest organ we have, choosing the right skincare is key!

Have you noticed the variety of plant and vegetable oils used in skincare products these days? From olive to rosehip, coconut, soybean, and even palm, there seems to be an endless range of oils available.

Sure, these oils are marketed as having amazing benefits for your skin, but have you ever wondered about the process used to extract them? Most commercial oils, both for skincare and food, undergo a combination of high heat, centrifuges, and chemical solvents to extract them. Then, they're refined with various chemical filters and additives to extend their shelf life and make them more palatable. Unfortunately, all this processing destroys many of the natural nourishing properties and benefits of the fruits or nuts.

At Four Cow Farm, our oils are derived from a traditional cold-pressing method. This process involves mashing the fruit and then slowly pressing it in a machine to avoid creating additional heat. As a result, the oil retains as much of the original benefits of the fruit or nut as possible.

Only the very best food-grade extra virgin cold-pressed oils from the best growers in Australia and we don't add any additives or fragrances that could mask the natural ingredients' authentic nature.

So, next time you see skincare and cosmetic products with amazing oils, make sure to double-check the quality of the oils used. If they're extra virgin cold-pressed, they should be clearly labeled as such!

Many of our customers who use our Calendula Remedy asked if we could develop a more potent version which they could use in other forms; and Calendula Concentrate was born.

Here are some of our favourite Calendula Concentrate uses:

1: For stubborn, dry, wrinkly spots on the face or neck, a few drops massaged in twice a day will make them disappear.

2: As an intensive, deep moisturising booster to your existing cream or lotion; applying a small amount to your skin in gentle strokes and allowing it to sink in before applying your usual moisturiser helps recover its glow.

3: As an aid to wound healing for irritated or inflamed skin, particularly burns and dermatitis, including those from sun damage and radiation. Its concentrated liquid form makes it easy to massage in and it needs only to be applied twice a day.

4: As a pre-makeup primer, a few drops lightly massaged in and allowed to absorb, provides the perfect dewy foundation for make-up.

Camellia oil, also known as tea seed oil, is a natural oil extracted from the seeds of the camellia plant. It has been used for centuries in traditional skincare routines in Asia, and has recently gained popularity in the West as a natural, nourishing skincare ingredient. Here are just some of the benefits of camellia oil:

1. Incredibly moisturising: Camellia oil is rich in fatty acids and helps to lock in moisture, making it an effective natural moisturizer for all skin types.
2. Anti-aging: Camellia oil is high in antioxidants, which help to protect the skin from free radicals and fight the signs of aging.
3. Non-greasy: Despite its rich, nourishing qualities, camellia oil is lightweight and easily absorbed by the skin, leaving a non-greasy finish.
4. Gentle: Camellia oil is gentle enough for sensitive skin, making it a wonderful option for those with skin conditions such as eczema or rosacea.
5. Versatile: Camellia oil can be used on its own as a facial oil, or added to your favorite skincare products for an extra boost of nourishment.

We love organic cold-pressed camellia oil and that’s the only quality of camellia oil we’ll use in our products (can’t you tell?) - and not just because it grows beautifully at Four Cow Farm, it’s because it’s one of the best therapeutic skincare oils out there.

🌻Are oils good for skincare in Singapore weather?

Oils are a wonderful addition to pretty much any skincare routine - and especially on skin that is dry, sensitive or affected by conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. But do you know the best way to use them?

The best way to use a skincare oil is actually as an additional product on top of your current moisturiser (which we hope is an all-natural one!). Why? The main purpose of lotions and creams is hydration and they are designed to sink deeper into the skin to do so. Their high moisture content makes it easier for them to do so rapidly, in addition, they can also contain other ingredients which help the skin renew itself.

The main benefit of skincare oils on the other hand is protective and nourishing. They are designed as skin conditioners which nourish the upper layers of the skin, helping reduce the loss of moisture, replenish the skin's own sebum and also deliver other specific skin benefits (for eg, reducing redness, enhancing skin renewal or calming the skin).

If you are only using a skincare oil, why not try adding a moisturising lotion or cream to your regimen? A few drops of oil is all that's needed when you're already using a base moisturiser. For a lovely facial moisturiser, try our Mother's All-Natural Daily Rich Cream Salve or our new Calendula & Camellia Lotion; the latter also makes a wonderful all-over body lotion.

And if you're only using a lotion or cream, why not try adding a skincare oil to your regimen? A few drops (1 drop only for face) patted into the skin twice a day can add other benefits to your skincare regime and replenish your skin's needs more completely. Try our Mother's All-Natural Intensive Restorative Oil if your main aim is renewal and rejuvenation or our Calendula Concentrate if your main aim is calming and nourishing the skin.

Whatever you use, ensure it is simple, safe and effective. Remember, your skin's a living thing and needs to be treated with the same care and gentleness as every other part of your body.

ďťżCreate the right skincare regimen and your skin will thank you and it will show!
