As the Sierra Leone U-20 national football team, the Shooting Stars, embarks on their historic debut at the TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt 🇪🇬 in 2025, they are expected to showcase not only their athletic prowess but also the rich cultural heritage of Sierra Leone through traditional attire adorned in national colors.
While specific details about the team’s travel attire have not been disclosed, it’s customary for Sierra Leonean delegations to don traditional garments that reflect national pride.
One such attire is the Kpokpo, also known as ‘country cloth,’ which is a handwoven fabric deeply rooted in the Mende ethnic group.
This cloth is often worn by chiefs and signifies high status.
Another traditional fabric is Gara, a tie-dyed cloth synonymous with the Krio and Sherbro people, often tailored into dresses, shirts, and trousers, and known for its vibrant geometric patterns.
For formal events, the Boubou, a flowing gown worn by various ethnic groups, is a popular choice.
It comes in different designs and patterns and is worn by both men and women during festive and cultural events.
These traditional attires, often incorporating the national colors of green, white, and blue, serve as a visual representation of Sierra Leone’s unity and cultural diversity.
As the Shooting Stars take the international stage, their attire will not only symbolize national pride but also share Sierra Leone’s rich cultural tapestry with the world.
