Two exhibitions in Chicago chart a path from colonial dispossession to the possibilities of dance, music, and community, says writer Laura Zornosa.

Though the two generate moods that are “strikingly different,” the exhibitions “pair artfully,” says Zornosa. “Dispossessions in the Americas: The Extraction of Bodies, Land, and Heritage from La Conquista to the Present” is solemn, mourning autonomy. “Dancing the Revolution: From Dancehall to Reggaetón,” on the other hand, “celebrates something given — joy and togetherness.”

Museum Watch | African Art Collections

The Ackland Art Museum at UNC–Chapel Hill is opening Continental Shift: Recent Acquisitions of African Art, an exhibition presenting selected African artworks added to the museum’s collection over the past five years.

The exhibition highlights materials including metalwork, textiles, beadwork, and ceramics from different regions of the African continent, with particular attention to eastern and southern Africa.

This is not a contemporary-art market signal in the strict sense. It belongs more clearly to the field of African art collections, museum acquisition, material culture, heritage, and institutional stewardship.

For Communiquè CPW, this is worth noting because museum collections shape how African artistic production is classified, preserved, studied, and presented to the public.
