Mwami Infusing Art into the mundane. Slow fashion, made of Africa. At the helm is fine artist Papi. These serve as the perfect frontier between old and the new.

Senegal-based design brand Mwami aims to bring together both urban and traditional cultures in its go-everywhere designs. Mwami, which launched in 2015, serves as another branch of his creative adventure through which he hopes to evoke a meaningful dialogue. “Our mission is to dress people in a way that they feel is theirs, allowing them to take ownership of the things they consume. Mwami is a way

to bring more intention into consumerism.”

Using contemporary silhouettes and fabrics while looking to tradition for technique and finesse, the brand looks to emerging African cities such as Dakar and Abidjan for its inspiration. For example, the embroidered patterns which distinguish Mwami pieces take their cues from sacred geometry, Arabian calligraphy and African iconography. So far, the brand has dressed the likes of Mr Eazi, Jidenna, Mayra Andrade, created a capsule collection with Senegalese rapper Nix, and been featured on CNN African Voices.
