The Bantu Wax Bandana combines the ancient Egyptian kerchief with the mystical drawings of the Senufo people of West Africa. The Senufo are famous musicians, artists, and textile makers. They have a rich musical culture playing handmade drums, iron gongs, flutes and horns while their woodworking and sculptural tradition includes coveted carvings, masks and bronzes. The notable Senufo Korhogo cloth is identified by hand-painted designs depicting natural elements rooted in Senufo culture and mythology. The Senufo use these cloths as a shield against vengeful spirits, hanging in a home or shrine, or as celebratory accessories. Senufo symbols in sculpture and textiles have influenced generations of artists, including Fernand Leger and Pablo Picasso.

We work with a collective which is made up of refugee women in Kenya who hand tie dye and hand silk screen each bandana. We hope you love them as much as we do.

Bantu Monogram Canvas

We’ve created a monogram collection to celebrate Africa’s love of logos, available exclusively online and through our official stockists; if you see it anywhere else it’s not the real deal.

In the last few decades, the fashion world and the entertainment industry have heavily tapped into African heritage, and commercialized African contemporary culture to dictate global hype and trends. Logo sporting and apparel appreciation in Africa often comes down to these same international fashion brands that design entire collections and campaigns inspired by the sartorial culture of African youth. More often than not, blatant appropriation is pawned off as influence when luxury brands raid African culture for their next closet highlights. Therein lies the conundrum of a world where pop culture is imbued with African talent, yet Africans are still looking outward for their emblems, thus disenfranchising themselves from their own influential identity. The celebration of experiences that are uniquely African should feel affirming and empowering to young Africans, as it is not just a commercial enterprise to them, but a platform for social change. Bantu Wax’s monogram collection is an ode to African logo culture and its timeless cachet. It celebrates Africa’s strong imprint on a broader scale by creating a logo that is distinctively African, and protects the value and power of African culture through a collection designed and made entirely in Africa.

Across the continent, from Morocco, to Senegal, to Namibia, young male surfers will spend hours in the water, sporting waistband briefs under their board shorts. What most likely began as a practical alternative to a mesh liner missing from their trunks, became the inadvertently cool and sexy signature beachwear look of the young African wave-rider. Creating their own hybrid shorts to enjoy the water for longer is a reflection on the authentic nature of African surf style, and the genuine devotion to a universal pursuit of freedom. The Bantu logo waistband brief is the African version of this iconic garment, worn by a youthful an energetic generation whose influential style stems from candid self-expression. After all, there is nowhere in the world sexier than Africa.

Back to Basics - The first product Bantu launched back in 2009 were our board shorts. For the past few years, we’ve been selling exclusively in our stores, in Africa. We have a lot of fun stuff in store but thought it made sense to go back to our roots. Introducing the new, improved version of our board shorts.
