Silent Rivers, Starving Communities

The drying of the Juba and Shabelle rivers is more than an environmental shock—it is a growing humanitarian emergency.

As water disappears, crops fail, livestock are lost, and families are pushed into hunger and displacement. Children and vulnerable households are paying the highest price, with limited access to food, safe water, and sustainable livelihoods.

This crisis is driven by prolonged drought, climate change, and fragile water systems. Its impact is happening now and will worsen without urgent, coordinated action.

At MEAL, we are working alongside affected communities to respond to immediate needs while advocating for long-term, climate-resilient solutions. Protecting water sources is not optional—it is essential to saving lives and safeguarding Somalia’s future.

When water disappears, hunger follows — and lives are at risk.

🌍 Drought, Displacement, and the Fight for Dignity

Prolonged drought in South & Central regions has devastated livelihoods, wiping out harvests, killing livestock, and forcing families to flee in search of survival. Newly displaced households are now living in fragile, makeshift shelters in Mogadishu and its corridors—constructed from collected clothes, mats, and scraps—without access to adequate assistance or protection.

Today, the MEAL team is registering newly displaced households using KOBO Single Registration Forms (SRF) to ensure they are identified and included in humanitarian response. Behind every registration is a story of loss, resilience, and urgent unmet needs—especially for women-led households, who face increased protection risks due to unsafe shelter, lack of privacy, and absence of basic household items.

With support from the IOM Common Pipeline, MEAL is providing plastic sheets as an immediate, life-saving response to help improve shelter safety. We sincerely thank IOM for this critical support, which comes at a time of acute need for newly displaced families.

However, plastic sheets alone are not enough. These households urgently require:

• Full Non-Food Item (NFI) kits to live with dignity

• Livelihood support to rebuild self-reliance

• Protection services, particularly for women and girls facing heightened risks

At MEAL, we continue to advocate for comprehensive, protection-centered, and sustainable humanitarian interventions that go beyond temporary relief and address the root causes of vulnerability.

📢 Displacement is not a choice. Survival should not come without dignity.

Ending FGM Requires Collective Action, Survivor-Centered Services, and Sustained Investment

Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM) remains a harmful practice that violates the rights, health, and dignity of women and girls in Somalia. At the Mission for Emergency Aid & Lifesaving (MEAL), we are committed to ending FGM through prevention, protection, and survivor-centered service delivery.

MEAL operates GBV Stop Centers and community-based programs in Mogadishu, Galgaduud, Bakool, and Hirshabelle, providing comprehensive support to women and girls affected by FGM and other forms of gender-based violence. Our services include confidential case management, psychosocial support, safe referrals to health and legal services, community awareness, and engagement with religious and community leaders to challenge harmful norms and protect girls at risk.

We believe that FGM prevention must be community-led, multisectoral, and adequately funded. MEAL actively contributes to national and regional efforts to end FGM by strengthening coordination, supporting survivor voices, and aligning our interventions with national policies and action plans.

We call upon donors, development partners, government institutions, UN agencies, and civil society organizations to invest in sustainable FGM prevention, GBV response services, and women- and girl-centered protection systems. Together, we can scale impact, strengthen survivor services, and accelerate the abandonment of FGM.

FGM can end. Survivors deserve care. Girls deserve protection.

📍 From Drought to Displacement: A Story Repeated Too Often

This photo captures the harsh reality faced by newly displaced families living in bush-made shelters constructed from collected clothes and mats. In front of one such shelter sits a newly displaced woman and her disabled child from Bakool, forced to flee after prolonged drought destroyed her harvest and claimed her livestock—her only source of survival.

Like thousands of others, she arrived in Mogadishu searching for safety and a chance to rebuild her life. Yet, until now, she has not received any humanitarian assistance.

Today, MEAL’s enumerator is registering her details using KOBO Single Registration Form (SRF) in preparation for the distribution of plastic sheets, a critical first step toward improving shelter conditions and reducing exposure to protection risks.

We sincerely thank IOM and the Common Pipeline for their support in providing plastic sheets, which offer immediate relief for newly displaced households. However, this situation also highlights a critical gap:
👉 Plastic sheets alone are not enough.

Displaced families urgently need full NFI kits, livelihood support to restore self-reliance, and protection services—especially for women and girls who face heightened risks in informal settlements.

At MEAL, we continue to advocate for integrated, dignity-centered humanitarian responses that go beyond emergency shelter to address long-term survival, protection, and resilience.

🤝 No family should be left to survive displacement alone.
