BREAKING NEWS | Abyei Residents Shut Borders in Protest Against Khartoum’s Election Position

Residents of the Abyei Administrative Area have reportedly blocked border crossings between Sudan and South Sudan in protest against Khartoum’s statement denying Abyei residents participation in South Sudan’s December 2026 general elections.

The protesters say the decision is an attempt to silence their political rights and deny them the ability to determine their own future.

“We will not allow Khartoum to decide our destiny,” protest leaders said.

The border closure has disrupted trade and movement, increasing concerns over rising tensions in the disputed Abyei region.

Abyei’s voice must be respected.

BREAKING NEWS | ABYEI RESIDENTS REJECT SUDANESE OFFICIAL'S CLAIM OF APPOINTMENT

ABYEI – Hundreds of residents gathered on Monday to reject claims made by Sudanese official Shimel Al Merkheni, who reportedly declared himself the Chief Administrator of Abyei under the Sudanese government.

Speaking in Nyala, Al Merkheni claimed that his appointment had been recognized and that the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) was aware of the decision.

In a swift response, members of the Abyei community assembled outside the UNISFA headquarters in Abyei and submitted a formal petition rejecting the claim. Community representatives described Al Merkheni's statement as false and misleading, insisting that it does not reflect the will or position of the people of Abyei.

The incident comes amid renewed tensions over the disputed Abyei region, following Sudan's recent objection to South Sudan's inclusion of Abyei in its 2026 electoral constituencies.
