We found these photos this morning. We made this plumeria 6 years ago.

We could have finished it in a day. We chose not to. We spent days with each pattern first. Learning it. Sitting with what it means. The "niho mano," the shark teeth, for strength and protection. The spearhead, for courage.

These meanings are not ours. They belong to the Pacific communities who have carried them for generations. So we did not borrow them lightly. We slowed down, and we listened, and only then did our hands begin.

6 years on, this flower has not aged a day. Maybe that is what respect does. It makes a thing last.

We still call it a classic. We always will.
