The "Berwiche"
This costume, designed and created in the Eya Zannad couture studio, represents a fusion between two distinct cultural aspects common to the inhabitants of North Africa, particularly Tunisia: namely, Berber symbols from the indigenous people of Tunisia and the mystical dance of the Dervishes.
The Inspiration Behind the Volume:
The volume of the skirt is inspired by the movement of the whirling Dervishes and the relationship of their body to space and the beyond. I found it interesting to highlight the garment on a body in motion by creating the surprise of a skirt that unfurls like a fan when the body turns in circles.
The choice of this particular dance, which has existed since the 8th century, is justified by my sensitivity to the Sufi concept of life: material detachment to purify the spirit and access the essential; spiritual strength. Dancers who manage to enter a trance testify to having achieved a form of ecstasy thanks to a strong spiritual connection.
In this same vein of transcendence, and while listening to intense lyrical music, the idea came to me to create a top that would evoke flight. I then constructed structured, rounded, and elevated sleeves.
We find these different aspects of transcendence and ecstasy in the embroidery, made at Tilli Tanit atelier in Mahdia.
An Homage
My choice for the Berber aspect is personal; it is directly linked to my maternal grandmother, who is of Berber origin and who was a figure of both strength and resilience for me. These women play an important role in society through the transmission of traditional savoir-faire (know-how) as well as through oral tradition, which contributes to the emotional and affective formation of the being. This is my way of paying tribute to them.
