I thought this was modern… until I found out it’s nearly 2,000 years old.

This mosaic is from the El Jem Museum, located in El Jem, Tunisia—right next to the iconic Roman amphitheater. It dates back to the Roman era (around the 2nd–3rd century AD), when this region—then called Thysdrus—was one of the richest cities in North Africa.

The movement in the water, the dolphins, the mythical creature, the softness of the human form… every tiny stone placed by hand. No machines. Just patience, skill, and vision.

These weren’t just decoration—they were status, storytelling, identity. Pieces like this lived on the floors of Roman villas, meant to be walked on… and still somehow survived centuries.

Seeing it in real life feels unreal.
Like time just… collapses.
