As AAPI Heritage Month wraps up, we’ve been reflecting on all the incredible women Jilly has gotten to meet over the last three years… gold medal Olympians, Emmy Award-winning journalists, Oscar-winning actresses and animators, best-selling authors, and more.

We like to think Jilly & Riley would have *very* strong feelings about Bay Area essentials: fluffy fruit sandos, boba runs, and all the little spots that make this place feel like home.

BTS of our Jilly Bing x Alysa Liu doll transition video was anything but seamless. From blood, sweat, and tears to full small-business survival mode… here’s what it actually took to make the magic happen. 🫶

Being a doll lady is equal parts passion, creativity, and controlled chaos.  Thanks for following along on this wild journey!

Our Alysa Liu–inspired doll is finally here! This may have been the hardest custom doll we’ve ever made. ⛸️

Alysa’s iconic hair stripes. The gold skating dress that took multiple factories to figure out. Me hand-drawing her tiny tooth piercing, while replaying figure skating clips!

Somewhere along the way, this became more than a doll. It became a celebration of — an Asian American figure skater who has inspired so many kids by showing them it’s ok to be joyful, fearless, funny, and expressive.

My daughter is completely obsessed and keeps asking:
“Do you think Alysa Liu would like our doll?” 🥹

So naturally… I now have one mission as the DOLL LADY:Somehow get this doll into Alysa’s hands.

Alysa, if you see this, thank you for showing our kids they can succeed, have fun, and be themselves. 🧡

Do these American Girl dolls (on the bottom right) look Asian to you? To me? Not really.

AG just released their KPop Demon Hunter dolls, meant to celebrate Asian characters.​ I wanted to be excited, but I kept coming back to this.

When one of the most well-known doll brands takes Asian characters and gives them non-Asian eye shapes and features, what are we telling the world about Asian features? About Asian eyes? And what are our children and their friends taking away from that?

So many of us grew up being teased for our Asian eyes. And heartbreakingly, young Asian girls are still coming home in tears today, feeling “less than” for the very same reason!

I’ve seen collectors point out that these Kpop dolls use existing American Girl molds. ​The doll mold IS the face, including the eye shape.

And I know doll molds are expensive. I invested in a ​making a new one because I was obsessed with Jilly Bing dolls having authentic Asian features.

If a small, mom-run brand can make that choice, it’s hard not to wonder what’s possible for the biggest brands in the industry, which is why I wanted to share a side-by-side here.

​Honestly, t​his feels a bit like a business opportunity that happens to showcase Asians.

I’m curious. Do the​se American Girl dolls read as Asian to you? Is “inspired by” enough?
