This is a 108-bead mala hand-selected in Nepal, where each bead has been individually hand-carved with a small skull face set into its natural ridged surface. Beads measure 12–16mm, with a total strand length of 88cm. No two beads are quite alike — the carving depth, spacing, and eye placement shift slightly from bead to bead, a clear sign of an artisan's hand rather than a mold or machine. That irregularity, paired with the warm, aged patina across the strand, is what gives a piece like this real character.
The skull motif carries meaning as well as beauty. In Tibetan Buddhist practice, skull imagery is closely tied to wrathful protector deities such as Mahakala, Yamantaka, Yoginis, along with the dancing skeleton pair Citipati — all associated with the destruction of ego, fear of death, and the teaching of impermanence.
