Ocre xMaasai, the embroidery

Based on the necklace made by Napokeki in Tanzania we created this colorful design that makes the main design of our Ocre xMaasai model. It represents the essential weapons of a maasai warrior: a traditional maasai shield with two spears crossed in the background. 🔆
The embroidery is made by our talented Portuguese embroiderer, using premium threads and cutting edge technology to make it as durable and flexible as possible. The result in daylight is amazing with bright colors and neat details.

Ocre xMaasai, the artwork

This colorful necklace was made by Napokeki and the women of jewelry ⚡

Thanks to we were able to get in touch with the women from Msitu Wa Tembo in northern Tanzania. It wasn’t easy since contact was dependent on the weather during the rainy season and roads were often flooded. 💧

The design of the necklace is inspired by traditional Maasai jewelry. It is composed of 5 different colors: blue, green, white, black and orange. These colors are the main colors of Maasai beaded jewelry and each of these colors is said to have a significance in Maasai culture.

The designs are often geometrical, here a mix of triangle shapes and straight lines were used to make this necklace worn tightly around women’s necks. 🔆

The Maasai culture 🛖

The Maasai people in Kenya and Tanzania have developed a rich and colorful culture. Traditionally, Maasai were fearsome warriors whose way of life revolved around grazing their main food source: their cattle. They adopted a semi-nomadic lifestyle tuned with the rhythm of these graze lands. 🌱

But Maasai also developed a rich artistic tradition of draped clothing and intricate beaded jewelry.

For centuries, Maasai women and men have adorned themselves with jewelry, headdresses and clothing. Adornments were once made from the available natural resources: clay, wood, bone, copper and brass.
Since the late 19th century and the development of trade with Europeans, the Maasai have adopted glass beads to make necklaces, bracelets and other jewelry.

Today, the talents of Maasai jewelers have spread throughout the world. They use glass and plastic beads for their handicrafts. Jewelry has become an important source of income for Maasai communities. 💪
Maasai handicrafts are mainly sold to international tourists who visit the nature reserves of Kenya and Tanzania.

In Maasai culture, the most colorful and intricate jewelry often indicates an individual's high social status. Most delicate jewelry is worn for special occasions. Maasai women are responsible for making the jewelry and often work in groups to create these colorful and meaningful pieces.🔅

---

Who are the Maasai? 🌳

The Maasai are a Nilotic ethnic group inhabiting Kenya and northern Tanzania. They are among the best-known Indigenous peoples internationally due to their residence near the many game parks of the African Great Lakes and their distinctive customs. The Maasai speak the Maa language and most Maasai people also speak Swahili and English. Maasai's total population is about 2 million.

Maasai lived originally in the region that is today Sudan. In the 16/17th century they migrated to the south searching for better lands to raise their cattle. Around 1750 CE they had arrived in the savannah grass plains of what is today southern Kenya and northern Tanzania.

Maasai were famed and feared as warriors. Searching for more lands, they faced other groups with the same intentions. Conflicts broke out about territories, protection or stealing of cattle. Carrying shields and spears warriors are also armed with throwing clubs (orinka).

The traditional Maasai way of life revolves around cattle. Cattle milk, meat and blood are key in the Maasai diet. They are nomadic pastoralists that move across the grazing plains of Kenya and Tanzania. Their village structure is thought to protect their cattle from the surrounding wild animals or enemies.

Maasai are famous for their crafting skills and colorful clothing. The traditional making of adornments from local materials evolved to glass or plastic-bead crafts since the 19th century. In the 1960s, with the availability of cotton, red, blue or black clothes replaced animal skins.
