Then you need My Neighbour Totoro (1988) in your life. This is the movie that launched a million plush toys, and the titular wood spirit – a big, cuddly, furry monster – is the symbol of Studio Ghibli. Set in the 1950s against a beautiful, pastoral backdrop, it tells the story of two young girls and their father who move into a new country home to be near the hospital where their mother is recuperating. There they meet Totoro and his friends, notably the incredible Catbus. The plot is slight but it doesn't matter – it’s just wonderful, for younger children and adults alike.

The problem was that the music industry made him out to be the only rock 'n' roll figure. Elvis didn't think that, he appreciated black musicians. I run into a lot of people who like Elvis but have issues with how he was singled out when musicians such as Fats Domino, Little Richard and Chuck Berry made huge contributions.

The first thing to know is that this film is enormous fun. As he did in Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Waititi brings his distinct voice to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's cookie-cutter franchise. His formula balances a tongue-in-cheek tone with adventure, prizing wit over action; a relief from Marvel's more sombre instalments. (Doctor Strange has his qualities but he's not a witty sort.) In Love and Thunder, Waititi injects more emotion than in Ragnarok and goes for weightier themes, about nihilism and belief, love and death. The themes may be half-baked, but they exist.

"The great thing about flying saucer design is that it is simple to the point of abstraction," Bould tells BBC Culture. "Its perfect symmetry insists that it is not some naturally occurring thing, while the absence of familiar signifiers of flight – no wings, no engines – insists that it must be not only a technological artefact but an incredibly advanced one. It asserts its place far ahead of us in the western mythology of progress."

Not that the saucer was entirely other-worldly. Its shiny curved surface, behind which lurked all sorts of complicated wires and valves, reflected the most fashionable cars, ovens, and washing machines of the post-war period. "The flying saucer appears in an era of secretive new technologies, primarily military, including the atomic bomb," Bould tells BBC Culture, "but also a flood of new domestic consumer technologies, the inner workings of which become increasingly mysterious to the average householder. The flying saucer seems to incorporate both tendencies, writ large across American skies."
