Night of Yesterday

Night of Yesterday The cost of a thing is the amount of what I call life which is required to be exchanged for it, immediately or in the long run. Henry David Thoreau

Earlier this year, we concluded our Galaxy S5 review on a note of optimism about the awesome potential of a well designed Samsung smartphone. It turns out that Samsung was already working on the thing we were asking for, which launches on AT&T today under the title of Galaxy Alpha.

Last year, Fujifilm introduced the X-T1, a tremendous camera that was designed from the ground up to appeal to serious photographers. It had great image quality, great ergonomics, and a class-leading viewfinder. It easily became my favorite camera of the year. But for all that the X-T1 offered, it was expensive and big. Neither of those things deterred serious photographers from plunking down the money and putting the X-T1 into their gear bags, but what if you’re a more casual photographer that wants a lot of what the X-T1 offers without the investment or bulk?

ActionAction cameras — those blocky little cameras you use when you want to record all kinds of intense moments, such as skydiving, white water rafting, high-speed go karting, and more — have been around for a while now. In the past few years, action cameras have developed from niche curiosities into really popular devices that can capture amazing footage. But every year it's still the same story: market-leader GoPro releases a new camera, and other companies desperately try to catch up. Some companies have come close to making one as good as its best, but as soon as they do, GoPro releases a new one.

Fujifilm’s new X-Pro2 is a tough camera to review by any ordinary metric — it’s an exotic tool that defies rational purchasing decisions. There are cameras in its price range that will give you better image quality, and there are cheaper cameras — even from Fujifilm — that offer more features.

But I love the X-Pro2, and I can’t really say why without spilling my subjective opinion. That’s because the X-Pro2 itself is an opinionated camera — and I happen to agree with it about a great many things.

Fujifilm's new flagship puts passion before practicality
