“Average is Not an Option.”

The Abilene Police Department and the Gray Family bid a heartfelt farewell to Agent David “DD” Gray, who recently passed away due to a medical complication.

Agent Gray dedicated over four decades of his life to serving the Abilene community. He joined the Abilene Police Department in February 1982 and retired just this past July after an incredible 43 years of service. But DD was so much more than the badge he wore. He was a man of faith, a loving husband and father, a proud patriot, and a true cowboy at heart. He cared deeply for his family, his horses, his students, and the people of this city.

Before his retirement, when asked for his favorite quote, DD shared, “Average is not an option.” Those words perfectly capture the way he lived his life — with purpose, passion, and heart.

Agent Gray was anything but average. His legacy will continue to inspire those who had the honor of knowing him and those who follow in his footsteps.

Thank you, DD, for your unwavering service, your friendship, and your example. You’ll always be part of the APD family. 💙
