He loved her deeply, she loved him too… so why was she asking for a divorce?

She was the one who called me first and I could hear in her voice that she still loved her husband very much, but she had reached a place of exhaustion

She told me he was a good man, a strong provider, generous, successful, and that materially he gave her almost everything she could ask for, yet emotionally she no longer felt free

He could not understand how they had reached that point because in his mind he worked hard, protected her, provided beautifully, and loved her deeply

He also did not want counseling

When I first spoke with him, I could feel the hesitation and the concern that he would walk into a room where he would immediately be blamed, so I simply invited him to come as he was, no pressure, no judgment, I wanted to hear him too

And he came

During one of our first sessions she started crying and finally began saying things she had carried inside for years

She told him how controlled she had felt, how he wanted to know where she was going, what she was spending, how she used her time, and how even parts of their intimate life had started feeling more like expectation than connection

I looked at him and could see the pain on his face because he truly loved her, he had never understood how deeply she was hurting

Then he looked at her and said, “Why didn’t you tell me when it happened, why are you telling Yael all of this now, why carry the anger for years until you explode”

That opened another part of their story

She had not always told him in the moment when something hurt her, instead she became quieter, more distant, less affectionate, and sometimes less interested in intimacy

He noticed the changes but read them differently, he thought maybe she was tired, stressed, moody, hormonal, or simply going through something

He could see that something was wrong, but he could not understand feelings she had never clearly put into words

That became such an important turning point for both of them because for the first time they could see that they were both hurting, just in very different ways

He needed to understand that some of his behavior felt controlling and was slowly pushing away the woman he loved, while she needed to understand that becoming quiet, distant, and carrying everything inside was leaving him confused rather than helping him understand what she needed

I told them something I deeply believe

Your partner cannot repair a wound they do not know they created

From that moment, our work became less about who was right and more about helping them truly hear one another

She began learning to speak while the hurt was still small instead of carrying resentment until it became too heavy, and he began learning to listen without immediately feeling attacked or needing to defend himself

As the sessions continued, I also began to understand what was underneath his need for control

He had grown up around wealth, competition, control, and complicated family patterns, and although he had always promised himself he would build a different life, some of those emotional habits had followed him without him even realizing it

Slowly, he began to see that underneath the control was fear, fear of being controlled himself, fear of losing what he had built, and underneath all of it, fear of losing the woman he loved

Once he understood that, something softened in him, and once she felt that he was finally hearing her instead of only reacting to her, something softened in her too

That was when the relationship really began to change

She started speaking sooner instead of withdrawing, he started listening before defending himself, she began building more independence, purpose, and a career of her own, and instead of seeing that as a threat, he learned to support her

She supported him and his business too

Then something beautiful happened

The more freedom she felt, the less she wanted to run, the more she communicated, the safer he felt, the more respected she felt, the warmer and more connected she became

Even their intimacy changed because it was no longer carrying years of unspoken resentment and pressure

Today they are still together and doing beautifully

Not perfectly, beautifully

They learned how to become a team without losing themselves inside the relationship

And to the men reading this who may be hesitant about counseling, coming for help does not mean you failed, sometimes it simply means “I love this person enough to understand what I may not be seeing”

My office welcomes people from many different journeys in life, some come ready to talk, some skeptical, some angry, some hurt, and some not even sure why they are there yet

You do not have to walk in knowing exactly what to say, you only need to be willing to show up

There may be counselors like grains of sand on the beach, but the true difference is in the heart, the connection, and the lasting change created between people

My reward has always been much greater than my fee

To see two people who once sat in front of me talking about divorce later walking through life as partners again is priceless

And I believe deeply that what we put into this world comes back to us many times over

I feel that in my own life constantly

Wherever my feet take me, there seems to be kindness waiting for me, someone opens a door, someone offers a hand, someone helps me without being asked, someone treats me with warmth and respect

I never take those moments for granted

To me, that is part of the blessing

When you give people love, patience, understanding, kindness, and support from a sincere heart, it comes back in ways money could never measure

I have always felt that healing is part of my soul, whether I am guiding a couple, helping someone through a difficult season, or creating art that brings emotion, beauty, and meaning into a space

That is why I thank God for choosing me to guide couples and people back to love, trust, confidence, peace, and understanding

To be able to help couples and people find their way back to themselves, to one another, and to a healthier place in life is a reward beyond anything I could put a price on

For me, this is much more than a profession

It is God’s work, and I feel deeply blessed to have been chosen to do it with love ❤️
