I’ve been debating on when and how to post this message for a few months now, but with some recent happenings, now it seems as as good a time as any. About 2 months ago, I was asked and accepted the opportunity, to assume the day to day responsibilities and ownership role of Sunlight Homes. Sunlight homes is a home design company that specializes in super insulated, passive solar, and general well thought through custom homes utilizing Structurally Insulated Panels as its primary building product. It’s not a construction company, but a design company. I will be designing these homes with the clients that reach out to us through the website.

My friend and class of 2007 Architecture school colleague and friend, Evan Davis and his father have ran this phenomenal business since the 80s so this is quite the role being charged with, keeping the business alive and well. I’m am incredibly grateful for this opportunity. But to say I’m prepared for this would be an understatement. It puts to practice my architectural degree, my 13 years construction experience, and my 8 years now running my own business. This is a much wanted and needed career shift as my body has begun feeling the effects of 20 plus years of making stuff and the general challenges of operating a creative business in this modern economy.

With all this said, DHD, while not being completely shutdown, will be essentially closed indefinitely. To say I’m thankful for the last 8 years would be an understatement. I have a huge list of folks and businesses who have made this career of mine possible and my words could never do you all justice. Literally thousands of jewelry pieces, dozens and dozens of built projects and endless blood sweat and tears. It’s going to be odd not having every weekend from thanksgiving to Christmas completely booked with art shows, but I’m so grateful to get the weekends this year to be with my family.

Thank you for everything Burque and beyond. I love you all and I’ll see you around.

Just finished and installed this asymmetric shelving unit. The house it was installed in is a home designed by Paula Baker-Laporte and Robert Laporte. They build in a style called . Sustainably built homes using straw framing methods with traditional stick frame, and timber framing methods. The homes have an over arching Japanese aesthetic through appearance and build.

The shelves were inspired from shoji screen doors that have horizontal shelf members offset with vertical supports at varying depths to support not only books and trinkets but records and a record player. All joinery utilizes basic but well executed mortise and tenon joinery. Wood used is wormy maple for the shelves and hard maple for the verticals, with two custom yellow colors on the edges to highlight and contrast.

After a relatively slow start to the year for my business, I decided to build something I really enjoy. Built with an awfully wide piece of mahogany, given to me by my grandfather, and a Russian olive live edge. Approximately 15”x20” top by 6” height.

For sale. Message if your interested

Finished the install on another set of these floating box shelves with colorful inserts. The client lives in the the north side of in the by and . Ricardo Legorreta was always a big inspiration of mine through the years so to have a piece in the complex feels great.

Constructed from rustic Cherry with painted mdf inserts. Mounted with wall cleats hidden behind a color matched plywood false panel to give the floating look. The insert colors were inspired by the colors found in the artwork the client owns. (Last 2 slides)

Would love to do an entire library or office in this style.

Any interest?!?!

Def feeling lucky and very grateful to be part of this one. Matt Spiniken is a phenomenal bonsai artist and even better person. He texted one day to ask if I had a stand made that would fit this tree, I replied “I don’t, but I’ve got an idea for one!” I threw a quick drawing up on my ideas board and the rest is history! Thanks for letting me accompany your amazing larch work my friend! steel work by

Install done on this take on shelving. Original request was for basic floating shelves to fit within the to walls. I presented multiple concepts, from plain to poppy, utilizing the adjacent wall to add dimension and character. THe colorful shelf inserts are less about function than they are color. Though as is they function exactly as a shelf should. You don’t always get clients that are down for something different, but when you do it’s the best. These sorts of projects makes what I do worth it. Thank you

Newest finished project! The owner of and contacted me about using the Keely line of furniture in her new wine bar opening right next to Esquina and Paloma THIS THURSDAY EVENING the 20th. put together some great artists like , and others to make this happen. The color scheme and all its elements work so well. I assembled a set of 6 stacking stools, 6 small tables that can be paired to make larger sets, 4 bar height stools, 2 large pressed plywood benches with custom upholstered cushions and the entire behind the bar shelving unit. It’s a jewelry box size of a spot, but it is so very intimate and with the wine selections and food it’s sure to be your new favorite date night hang! Again, this Thursday evening the 20th. Be sure to follow for more information.

4/20 seems as good a day as any to share the work I just finished at the location on the west side. The large space with tall seatings needed a more intimate spot to have client meetings about health and wellness and ways Verdes could help. They wanted something simultaneously calming and fantasy driven. I designed and built out the garden. A wavy frame drop ceiling using parametric style forms with flower light fixtures that will be changed out with alternate colors every new season. The footprint is 15’x12’ and was a bit tricky to figure the hanging and assembly. A fun project! Thank you !
