A few years ago my friend Mark suggested I should join a local musky club. I didn't have many friends that lived close to go fishing with and he said that he really enjoyed being a part of fishing clubs in the past.

I took his advice and I'm going on my 3rd year as part of the 12 Apostles Musky Club. Along the way I have gained friendships, listened to some great speakers, helped with community events and with musky stocking into the stevens point stretch of river. I'm also grateful to have jumped in the boat with some good fisherman and learned a thing or two about the river/fishing in general.

Our club and others like it really help the fishery by stocking fish into our local waters. With the political handicaps that the DNR experience with funding, workers, etc it's important to help your local club, you might just gain a friend or learn a thing or two In the process!

Bait isn't cheap and half dead suckers don't fool as many fish. I grabbed some water conditioner from petco to treat my city water but also to mix in the bait cooler. I paired my lithium battery to a 12 volt aerator for extra oxygen in the cooler.

I'm heading to Minnesota for a few days next week to chase some toothy critters with some friends from the 12 apostles musky club. I put this basic pyramid together for my presentation to the club a couple months back.

Nothing is ever 100% in fishing, but there are variables we can control and variables we can't control. There are also variables that we can keep track of and help to increase are success in the future.

I didn't grow up on the river but it doesn't take long to figure out that the flow/current is one of the most important variables all the time. On a lake it might be the wind direction. On a cold front it might be the lake selection or the lure type. On a horribly windy day it might be your boat control. In tough conditions it could be the moon rise or underfoot, maybe lure retrieve style as well. Hot weather conditions could be the time of day/night. During a calm day it might be a slight weather change etc.

If you aren't on the water following the pattern consistently, then it always pays to look back at the conditions you had in the past at this time and compare it with current conditions. Keep an open mind, monitor the variables you can't control and keep making changes to the ones you can until you start to dial something in. Hopefully, Randy and I can put something together next week!

Explored a new lake with my beautiful fiance on Wisco opener and got rewarded with a couple nice fish. I also tried using a very poor landing (against advice from Carissa) and almost got stuck 🤔
