Do you strive to achieve perfectly smooth set in sleeves? Your sleeves do not have to have tiny tucks or gathers!
Sleeve pattern pieces are longer than the armhole you need to sew it into. Many pattern directions tell you to sew rows of basting stitches and then gather the extra fabric to ease it in. That’s fine if you want a gathered look. I don’t!
Try this next time:
1) Pin the middle (or if you have a really well drafted pattern, pin the shoulder seam to the shoulder notch on the sleeve) and sides of the sleeve.
2) Starting at the top of the sleeve head (sleeve piece on the top) lay the fabric over your finger and pin. Move down a little and repeat all the way to the side. If there is quite a bit extra to ease in you will have lay it over your finger more times.
3) Repeat for the other side of the sleeve head. Both sides won’t necessarily have the same amount of pins.
This method does have it’s limit. Sometimes there is just too much extra and you have to gather.
