Do you strive to achieve perfectly smooth set in sleeves? Your sleeves do not have to have tiny tucks or gathers!

Sleeve pattern pieces are longer than the armhole you need to sew it into. Many pattern directions tell you to sew rows of basting stitches and then gather the extra fabric to ease it in. That’s fine if you want a gathered look. I don’t!

Try this next time:

1) Pin the middle (or if you have a really well drafted pattern, pin the shoulder seam to the shoulder notch on the sleeve) and sides of the sleeve.

2) Starting at the top of the sleeve head (sleeve piece on the top) lay the fabric over your finger and pin. Move down a little and repeat all the way to the side. If there is quite a bit extra to ease in you will have lay it over your finger more times.

3) Repeat for the other side of the sleeve head. Both sides won’t necessarily have the same amount of pins.

This method does have it’s limit. Sometimes there is just too much extra and you have to gather.

When my oldest daughter was young I made many of her Easter dresses. I haven’t done much of that for my younger girls. But I found this pattern from Peek-a-Boo Pattern Shop. I’m super excited to get this made up in this cute floral fabric.

Do you want to make your tote bag a little sturdier?

Consider stitching the handles all the way down your bag.

This works well if you have a thin webbing type strap. On this bag I used a seatbelt-like strap (webbing).

I stitched the webbing on both sides straight down from 1 1/2” below the top to the bottom. To hide the straps I sewed on a bottom panel over top.

To attach bottom piece (picture with blue in middle). Draw a line across bag (side to side) where you want the stitching line to be. Then draw one 1/2” down (that was my seam allowance). Place the TOP of the bottom piece on the 2nd line you drew. Stitch 1/2” from the edge. Flip the piece down (cover the raw edge) and press.

The second picture shows the bottom piece attached.

Now you have a cute design detail and a strong bag with the straps supporting it.

Don’t you jus love this cute fox fabric! My niece is going to love her new tote bag.

When I am making a project with a lot of pieces I always label them.

Projects that have you cutting a bunch of squares and rectangles can get to confusing and by the time you are done you have no clue what’s what.

As you cut, clearly label each piece. You will be patting yourself on the back later. Trust me!

Just so you know, post it notes are not the best for this. One little move of the fabric and ”there they blow”. 🤣

If you are using paper or not really sticky enough post it notes just pin the paper to the fabric. Then your free to wave it about all you want.

Sewing Tip Tuesday

To sew a straight line don’t watch the needle. Instead keep you eye on your fabric running along the specific place you have lined up on the foot or throat plate.
