Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities

Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities Founded in 1947, IAMU today serves more than 750 municipal utilities in Iowa. The American Public Gas Assn. IPAIT is an investment alternative for public funds.

Electrical Services: Member municipal electric utilities enjoy access to many timely programs and business options in this period of major changes in the electric industry. IAMU’s inhouse training facilities offer electric utility members many educational opportunities, including overhead and underground electric workshops, metering workshops and more. Gas Services: IAMU offers its member gas ut

ilities assistance with system installation, upgrades and compliance education. Midwest Regional Gas Operators Workshop is held each fall at IAMU’s Training &
Office Complex. Recent advances have resulted in national attention for IAMU’s gas training programs. Water Services: IAMU provides assistance with water and wastewater analysis, maintenance, compliance, education and information for its more than 500 municipal water utility members. The annual Water and Wastewater Operators
Workshop is always well-attended. In-house facilities include a working water laboratory. Telecommunication Services: IAMU’s member utilities involved in the growing
arena of municipal telecommunication can obtain the latest legislative and technical information, advice on managing a system and professional contacts to assist with system development. Energy Services: IAMU provides energy efficiency services to member utilities, including assistance in the formation and implementation of energy efficiency programs, resource planning and a consumer publication for utility customers. Technical & Environmental Services: IAMU promotes engineering considerations and stewardship of natural resources, including support and resources for stormwater management programs through the Iowa Storm Water Education Program, ISWEP (www.iowastormwater.org)

Legislative & Regulatory: Through lobbying of the Iowa Legislature by IAMU
representatives, the needs and concerns of Iowa’s municipal utilities are presented to state lawmakers each session. Efforts are made to ensure that passage
of any utility-related bills represents the best interests of IAMU’s members. Tracking of bills keeps membership informed as legislative sessions progress. Job Training & Safety: IAMU maintains active safety committees and workshops for electric, gas and water utilities. IAMU Safety Clusters have been established
throughout the state to bring current, effective job safety to local communities. Through meetings held on-site at member cities and at IAMU’s Training & Office Complex, a wide variety of classes are available to IAMU members. Meetings & Workshops: IAMU offers an annual general membership conference,
regional meetings and individual workshops which cover a wide variety of topics. Member city and utility employees receive valuable training, certifications
required for their jobs and the chance to network with peers and industry professionals. Drug & Alcohol Testing: IAMU provides assistance to its members regarding
compliance with federal drug and alcohol testing requirements through the Drug & Alcohol Testing Alliance (DATA) program. Training on Demand: IAMU members can access more than 60 individual
training courses online with IAMU’s Training on Demand. Students may work independently or under the guidance of a supervisor to enhance their skills and
value to their employer and customers. GIS-GPS Services: IAMU now offers GIS and GPS mapping services to member utilities. Workshops are offered to enhance members’ skills and knowledge in this area and to allow them to implement their own mapping systems as a money-saving option. Insurance Programs: The IAMU Safety Group Insurance Program offers competitive, comprehensive insurance to members. IAMU also endorses a fully funded health and life program. IPAIT: Member cities and their utilities are eligible to participate in the Iowa Public Agency Investment Trust (IPAIT). Contact Bryant Sheriff at [email protected]. Member Communication: Through a number of tools, including electronic publications, a web site, email and more, IAMU keeps its members informed of a variety of important news and information in a timely fashion.

This week is set aside to honor professionals in the water and wastewater industry who are essential to the health, safety, and daily life of every community. They’re often behind the scenes, but their work makes modern life possible:

- They protect public health by ensuring drinking water is safe and wastewater is properly treated.

- They keep essential services running for homes, businesses, schools and hospitals.

- They respond around the clock to leaks, equipment failures, severe weather, and other emergencies.

- And they’re trusted stewards of critical infrastructure, maintaining complex systems that most people rarely think about until something goes wrong.

Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities (IAMU) encourages all members to take time this week to honor the water and wastewater operators in their communities who keep clean water flowing and wastewater moving safely!

Led by OSHA, Safe+Sound Week is a nationwide event to recognize the steps businesses have taken to improve workplace safety and health.

IAMU is proud to be part of that effort in Iowa. Through our Iowa Safety Education Program (ISEP), we offer more than 70 safety training courses to help Iowa’s workers remain safe—both on and off the job.

Our safety experts cover a wide range of topics, including fall prevention, toxin exposure, repetitive motion injuries, CPR/first aid, safe operation of forklifts and backhoes, hearing conservation and much more.

This week, and every week throughout the year, IAMU is dedicated to building stronger, safer workplaces! Want to learn more about IAMU’s Iowa Safety Education Program? Click Here

Handle hiring at your utility? Deal with leave requests? Have to have "the talk" with an employee about performance? Then this conference is for you. Even if HR is just one of the ten things on your job description.

IAMU's first-ever HR Conference (August 12–13, Ankeny) was built specifically for utility staff who handle HR-type responsibilities. This conference is for clerks, office managers, superintendents, and admin staff at utilities of every size. You don't need a background in HR to walk away with tools you can use Monday morning.

Taught by top employment law attorneys and HR experts from across Iowa (Ahlers & Cooney, Drake University, Dentons Davis Brown, BrownWinick, Fredrikson & Byron, Whitfield & Eddy, Dickinson Bradshaw, and Nyemaster).

Another Mobile Crane Operator Certification class is in the books!

Last week, operators spent five days at our Ankeny training complex working through classroom instruction, hands-on crane operation, and both written and practical NCCER exams.

Big thanks to our trainers, who make sure every operator leaves with a solid grasp of ASME B30.5 standards, load charts, and safe hoisting best practices. That knowledge goes straight back to work in communities across Iowa.

Next certification class runs Sept. 28 to Oct. 2, with re-certification Oct. 20 to 22. Learn more or register at nccer.iamu.or
