If you’ve ever seen these and thought… is this a plate or a bowl? this is your answer 🥰

These are traditional soup bowls… and they come in a couple different styles. Some have that classic rim (you’ll hear them called rimmed soup bowls), and some are smooth all the way across (those are coupe bowls). Same purpose, just a slightly different look.

They were a staple in a full place setting, usually sitting right on top of the dinner plate or just above it, ready for the first course.

They’re wider and more shallow than a cereal bowl, which is exactly why they work so well for:

• soups and stews
• pasta
• salads
• risotto or lighter meals

They feel a little more elevated than your everyday bowl, but they’re honestly one of the most practical pieces you can own.

Once you know what they are, you start noticing them everywhere… and reaching for them all the time. They tend to become the favorite piece on the table 🌸

I think this might be my favorite part of this work.

Discovering a pattern I’ve never seen before and having it stop me in my tracks.

This is Royal Worcester Valentine, and I found this set at an estate sale this past week. The colors, the fluted edges, the soft gold, the florals that feel romantic and playful at the same time.🌸

I opened The Delicate Dish in the fall of 2019, and since then I’ve sourced and handled thousands of pieces from countless vintage makers, styles, and patterns. And still, every so often, something new comes through that gives me all the feels. 🥰

What most people don’t realize is the value tucked inside our mismatched sets.

A single dinner plate in this pattern sells for around $45 on the replacement market. Pieces like this are often included in our curated assortments, alongside many other valuable and collectible patterns, for less than half of their individual worth.

Our customers aren’t just receiving beautiful, one of a kind place settings with history and character. They’re receiving china that was made to last a lifetime with care, pieces with stories, and often pieces worth far more than what they paid for the set.

We’re able to keep our pricing accessible because we don’t photograph and list every piece individually, and we don’t have the added labor of going back and forth with customers requesting specific pieces.

For those who love an eclectic, mismatched style and pieces with personality, this is exactly where we shine. And it feels especially fitting that this Valentine pattern came through just a few weeks before Valentine’s Day. 💘

Small Business Saturday always feels a little special over here. Every vintage plate, teacup, or mismatched set that leaves my hands has a story, and it means something to know those pieces are headed to homes, weddings, tables, and celebrations that value charm over mass-produced everything.

I never planned on running a vintage china shop, but The Delicate Dish grew out of my love for secondhand treasures, old-world craftsmanship, and giving beautiful pieces a new life. What started as a simple idea turned into a business that helps people create meaningful tables and memorable moments… and I’m grateful every day that I get to do this.

If you’re shopping today, choosing small truly makes a difference. Every order supports a real person, a family, and a dream that’s been built one dish at a time.

Whether you buy vintage, share a post, leave a review, or recommend a small shop to a friend… it all matters.

Happy Small Business Saturday from The Delicate Dish and Thank You for supporting small, and for keeping vintage alive. 💛

Mismatched china bowls have a way of making ordinary moments feel special. 🍓

Around here, they’re the first thing we reach for... a scoop of ice cream, a handful of berries, a little sauce on the side... even a spot to drop earrings or rings at the end of the day. They just fit into daily life in the best way.

We’ve been stocking up as we head into the holidays... to be ready for the Thanksgiving and Christmas rush ahead... the season makes simple, beautiful pieces like these feel extra meaningful. 🥰

Have you ever wondered why fine porcelain dinnerware is often called china?

The answer actually goes back hundreds of years… and straight to China itself.

Porcelain was first developed in China more than a thousand years ago, admired for its strength, translucence, and delicate beauty. When European traders began importing it in large quantities in the 16th and 17th centuries, it quickly became one of the most prized luxury goods in the world.

People started calling it “China ware” or simply “china”… not because of what it was made of, but because of where it came from. Over time, the name stuck and became a general term for fine porcelain, no matter where it was produced.

Interestingly, the word “porcelain” itself comes from the Italian porcellana, meaning cowrie shell which is a nod to its smooth, glossy finish.

So when we say we love our “china,” we’re really echoing centuries of admiration for the artistry that began in ancient China… a legacy that continues to influence ceramics and tableware design to this day. 🍽️♥️
